Bryans Stats

According to new book I bought at the Open, THE BUD COLLINS HISTORY OF TENNIS, the Bryans have six more major men's doubles titles to go to tie the all-time record set by Tony Roche and John Newcombe. They are two major final showings shy of tying the all-time record for men's doubles finals played set by the Woodies with 15. The Bryans hold the record for most losses in major men's doubles finals with 7 - one ahead of Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor and two ahead of Bob Lutz and Stan Smith. Interesting stuff...are they GOAT doubles team?

Re: Bryans Stats

Maybe they still have time but they'll certainly not match five straight Wimby titles that the Woodies achieved. Maybe the Bryans are stronger on clay but the Woodies achieved so much more everywhere else.

In Davis Cup they're even, both @ 14-2 win-loss ratio. Actually Fleming/McEnroe were an even more impressive @ 14-1.

Re: Bryans Stats

It'll be interesting to see how they cope in their 30s. Obviously they're on a similar decline to Federer but they should still win the odd slam here and there. The competition isn't great.

They only need to win their rubber against the Spaniards to be the greatest Davis Cup doubles team IMO.

Re: Bryans Stats

Tough to compare the Bryans to doubles teams of the past since they have screwed up doubles so bad with best of 3, no ad, and that champions TB. It is a totally different game today. Davis cup, is a fair comparison.

Re: Bryans Stats

US Open was always best-of-3 and Wimbledon still is best-of-5.

We're not discussing MM titles so the comparison is perfectly fair.

As a result of the changes in doubles there are not as many teams that play doubles on a regular basis. That changes the competitive levels in all tournaments including the majors. So changes in the MM tournaments do if fact affect the competitive nature of the majors.

What I'm saying this that teams that play regularly now, eg Bryans have an advantage over teams in the past. They have limited the doubles draws so much throughout the year, that the few teams that do get to play regular events have an advantage when they play majors. Plus as a result of the changes there are not as many teams so the competition in the majors is not nearly as tough as it used to be.
