Length of matches

I think tennis matches have gotten to long lately. Whether it be Nadal and Djokovic waiting till January too serve or just the length of points.

Right now Del Porto and Murray have taken 2 hours to play 2 sets.
Djokovic took an eternity to beat Cilic.

what do you think?

Re: Length of matches

So you don't like long and thus tight matches between two close-to-equal players, but rather watch a lopsided bagle-dishing out??? Can't disagree with you more.

The time-wasting some players apply is a completely different matter, and should be dealt with by the umpires according to the rules of the game...

Re: Length of matches

I like tight matches, but it is taking too long to complete just 2 sets!

Re: Length of matches

You could look up match lengths for maybe a tournament or two and compare them over the years and that would give you a more definite answer.

But it would take a long time.

Re: Length of matches

Well a few decades ago players didn't sit down during changeover and took like 10 seconds between points, so matches were much much shorter.

It is a bit excessive nowadays.

well... a couple of decades ago there were little timing rules, and virtually no systems in place for excessive arguing and gamesmanship...

if anything... the game is more sterile for the rules...

but... for sure djok and nadal arent policed by the rules for some reason...

i will agree with you about only one thing... that the timing rules in place are not applied to two players... they have bent the rules over time so carefully, that, its a force that umpires are now finding hard to stop...

some umpires have balls tho... and do call it... rarely...

Re: Length of matches

The towel wiping is annoying, I mean how much sweay can you accumulate in a single point? It's just OCD at that point.

Re: Length of matches

Definitely the dead time during Nadal's (and some others') matches gets annoying. After he finishes a point, he goes to the back of the court, towels off, takes his time picking out a ball, steps up to the line, adjusts his pants, bounces the ball a bunch of times, and then finally hits his serve. And even if the point only lasts one shot, he goes through the whole routine again. Maybe if the ATP wants to make tennis more exciting for new fans, they would actually penalize Rafa for taking too much time.

Re: Length of matches

Well yeh sometimes I can't be arsed watching a 3+ hour match, specially when it's someone I don't really care about. I have to get up and do something in between.

Allez!
