Cincy R1: Monfils crushes Young 6-1, 6-1

Monfils was just too much for the 19-year-old to handle. In addition to Monfils' consistency, Young was extremely sloppy, unsuccessfully chasing down balls and spraying UEs all over the court. He played horribly.

On the health-side, Monfils was grimacing a lot. One of the commentators suggested that it was a breathing problem. After the trainer came out, Gael complained of "lack of energy", leading one of the commentators to blaming a food bug that's "going around" (referring to Mario Ancic pulling out of the tournament due to an unspecified illness).

Monfils looked like he was dying out there and still destroyed Young.

And Monfils wasn't feeling alright

I feel sorry for Donald. He is no agressive at all, just passing the ball a hundred meters above the net. He seems not to know what to do on the court, got totally embarassed at his own country. It must be difficult to him to try something in the pro circuit. Hopefully he improves and at least manages to stay with dignity in the circuit in the future. I'll be cheering for him.

The only good thing I can say about this match is that at least it was quick. Only 53 minutes. There were a couple of games that were over before I even noticed they had started.

Why is Donald Young so hyped? He is awful. Every time I have seen him he has been horrendous. He has no power, no variety, no weapons. He doesn't even move well or serve well. He got destroyed even though Monfils looked like he was at death's door. He's just a really poor player, yet he is talked about like he is the next big thing.

Both night matches were crappy. At least Safin livened up the first one. Young needs to play challengers to get more experience before he attempts to play centre court at a MS. Hope Monfils feels better and can continue. Commentators said there maybe a food bug going around.
