Victor Estrella (Rep.Dominicana) into Cincy MainDraw !

Victor Estrella becomes the first dominican player to play a master series tournament. He is ranking is near 270 and he is the player with less ranking in the tournament but who cares about that, the important thing is that he could make the main draw after beating Bopanna and Capdeville.
Sadly he will play against Verdasco in the first round so his chances to go far are a few.

Jose Hernandez and Francesca Segarelli are the junior star of the country.

All the best Victor

baseline player, his backhand is like feliano's one just slice and maybe one or two shots with top, or at least that was what i see when he played in bogota some weeks ago.

Re: Victor Estrella (Rep.Dominicana) into Cincy MainDraw !

Is it me or was the qualifying draw really weak here? It just seems like totally random players are in the main draw and a lot of these players were actually seeded in the qualifying.

In any event, good luck to this guy.

Re: Victor Estrella (Rep.Dominicana) into Cincy MainDraw !

I saw him win Buffalo futures 2 years ago...strong forehand...very quick...solid player.

He's been around...hopefully he keeps it close.

The draw wasn't very strong, but I don't know which qualifiers you consider totally random other than Estrella and maybe Yani.

A fellow countryman made it into a Master Series, that's craaazy!

So good to hear. At least it's not only baseball we have pro-players in!

Yeah, sure, we have Felix Sanchez, but he's more American than Dominican, sadly...

Shame that Tennis is considered a "high class" sport in many latin countries, the Dominican Republic being one of them.

Re: Victor Estrella (Rep.Dominicana) into Cincy MainDraw !

With Estrella about to start his match against Verdasco, I got curious, and looked up some other Caribbean players in ATP events.

In singles, Estrella appears to be the first Caribbean player to have qualified for a Master Series event since Ronald Agenor at Montreal 2001.The only other Carribean singles players since then I can find are now-American Ryan Sweeting at 2006 Washington and Jamaican Dustin Brown at 2003 Newport. So, very well done to Estrella, hopefully he gives Verdasco a good match and makes many future ATP appearances.

High class is more like an understatement, it's more like still the old fashioned elitist sport after Golf. Only the few that live in Arroyo Hondo seem to play tennis at leisure, Arroyo is synonymous with affluence in our country.

It was surprising that a fellow countryman of mine was even in the top 500, I had not heard of him or any one ranked in the top 1000 before.

True this. But it's not as if the Dominican government does anything to promote athletes in our country.

Only Baseball players are famous in the DR, and that's because scouts from the states come to recruit them.

And this will continue to be true in various countries unless somebody does something about it.....

Yup they simply don't care about tennis or any sport other than Baseball. I guess they can only stick to what's profitable, especially for a small country (island) with so much debt.
