Cincy R1: Kohlschreiber def. Yan(n)i; 6-3; 6-4

I wonder how often Yan(n)i gets made fun of?

Looks a bit like Yanni too. This was only his 2nd tour match. He's a former Dook University player. Never much of a star, not even in college (played behind Phillip King as I recall). Good showing to get in Masters Series main draw. Better showing against Kohlschreiber actually than I expected. The courts must be pretty fast for him to hold serve 7 times.

How big is Yani (height and weight).

I see he was born in December 1980, so he will be 28 this year. Long time to keep living "the dream". He must have been pretty excited to make it through qualies this week.

Skinny kid, not very tall, I'd guess under 6', but a hell of a serve, at least at the college level. Yani is half Asian, I think his dad is Japanese, and his dad is some sort of international financier or developer or something and is very rich so Yani's been able to "live the dream" long past most players with $75K winning in 6 years on tour.

He's occasionally practiced out at the club where I play. I had to bump him off the court once when his time was up. He was quite cool about it. He seems like a nice guy.

I've crossed paths with him a few times. Seems like a really nice guy.
Thanks for the info.

I'm pretty jealous of kids like this. What a nice way to spend your 20's. Hope he is enjoying it.

I didn't see the match today. Was it ever close or did he just get "routined" as the scoreline suggests?

I just followed online score. It seemed quite routine. Fairly early breaks both sets.

Until recently he's been pretty much just future's tournament player. From what I hear that's really not that fun. I heard he had some kind of severe food poisoning at one point when he was traveling in some really obscure country. I think Tennis magazine once did a profile on the struggles of playing futures and Yani was one of the hard luck players they featured in it.

Wow, Kohli has beaten an opponent

horrible stretch lately for him, but I'm not sure whether he can string two wins together because he's playing worse than as he has beaten Roddick at the AO

Carlos --- C'MON Lleyton!!! --- Kiwi!!! --- Jürgen --- Juan

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

Yani won a challenger a few months ago (Yuba City), which was a pretty big surprise. I guess there must be a little bit of talent there somewhere.

A lot of talent actually. I watched him play a fair bit in college. He's one of the more fun college players I've seen. Huge serve for a skinny little guy, and he followed it to the net. Sort of rubberband like athleticism along the lines of Guga, if that makes any sense. He could pull off incredible stuff but just wasn't very consistent.

I think Mike had mono a year or two ago. He also had a shoulder injury as well (dislocation, I think). He's a good guy, he finished college and yeah, he gets to live the life out on tour, but I swear everyone I've ever heard of that has been his housing host at a tournament falls in love with him. He's one of my favorites, so I was happy to see him get through qualies and pick up a decent paycheck this week.

Best twitter posts of the epic match:

@dougrobson - Whoever is supplying Mahut with hair gel needs to ink a sponsorship deal now.

@Wimbledon - FYI, with @Wimbledon live scoring devices, please add 50 to the games in the fifth set of the Isner v Mahut match.

@HolterMedia - Nice to see that a three-day test has come to tennis here @wimbledon.

Yani and Widom pulled out a doubles win today over Blake and Querrey! Means nothing to Blake and Querrey but I'm sure it's a huge highlight for Yani's career.
