But that wasn't the problem. Even if he had converted Stan would have broken right back. He was always in control and could win points whenever fully focused. Marat still not constructive enough from the back of the court. He relies too much on big serving and opponent errors. Stan wasn't great today but he still looked comfortable.
2 matches within 5 hours is harsh. you have to mentally prepare again, cant let your body relax, wonder if he got a massage, he must have been hella pissed by it.
what time did he get on court for the second round?
there were some very good exchanges. little separated them except safin couldn't convert his breaks chances
Stan was too good and too consistent.
I still think Safin will play some good tennis the rest of the season. Before, if things didn't go well, he will just implode. Now I see him a lot more focus and try to fight when he's behind.
Marat had like 100 BPs. Wawrinka in second set was lucky that he was not broken. Marat did not take advantage of any BPs he had. I cant remember how many 0-40, 15-40 there were on wawrinkas serve. But Marat was ready to go to bed. He looked Sleepy. But i guess it was too much to ask from safin to win two matches in less than 5 hours. He has not won two straight matches on Hard court since last year. So asking him to win two Hard Court matches in less than 5 hours back to back??..i guess thats just too much asking. Come On Marat..give us a good hard court season now.
It wasn't just the BP conversion, there were many times he went 0-15, 0-30 up and then looked totally unconvincing. He shanked a return or played passive and let Stan boss him. No ideas in his head how to play on the crucial points.
This match was a bit boring to watch. I'm glad Wawa won though - I want him to live up to his seeding and do well in big tournaments. His surliness and self-doubt endears me to him.
