Does every French player bring with them a little unique talent, knack, aptitude, gift—OK, I’ll put down the Thesaurus and go with the obvious: flair—or do I just think this because they happen to be French? Simon is a smooth-to-the-point-of-nonchalant counterpuncher. He pushes soft, tricky, low-trajectory shots with his flat forehand and two-handed backhand. If I didn’t know otherwise, I’d guess from his deceptively gentle style that he was Italian. In Indy, Simon had just enough in the counterpunching department to flummox bigger hitters like Tommy Haas, Sam Querrey (in an entertaining, see-saw semi), and Dmitry Tursunov, the Great White Mope, who looked like he made a wrong turn at the beach yesterday and ended up on a tennis court. It was a nice run for the 23-year-old Simon, who showed again that there’s still room for a little tricky talent amid the ever-more-athletic power game.

Gilles isn't the real deal. He's an amazingly skilled player, has a lot of talent and a nice game to watch, but I don't think he qualifies as the real deal.

Well, he has more success than some of the "big deals"

Exactly what I'm thinking.

Tim Henman--Gael Monfils--James Blake--Donald Young--Rafael Nadal--Jo-Wilfried Tsonga--John Isner--Janko Tipsarevic--Richard Gasquet.

Do something that a "real deal" would do.

Re: What Does Gilles Simon Have To Do To Convince Us He Is The Real Deal?

What do you consider a big deal? Talented? Be number one? Win a GS? Beat a great player? I think Simon is enough talented to be on the best 40 and stay there. I do not think he will win a GS or he will be number one. He is an average tennis player. Like many others. Today the outstanding players (big deal players) are Federer, Nadal and the perspective of Djokovic could be consider.. I do not see any other? With the time we will see another young guys that we can see as a big deal player.. It must happen.
We like average players, like Youzhny, Kiefer, Grosjean, Davydenko, Gasquet, Lopez because they can sometimes surprise and amaze us.. but they wont do anything more. Because they are old and or they do not have the ability to do it. And, of course there are others super talented and a real waste, like Safin, Hewitt and Haas.
It might be wrong about Simon, but this how I see about him right now.

My words exactly.

Off the top of my head, I don't remember a single reasonable result in a mandatory...don't think he has made a QF?
