Tim Henman: Nadal Is The Best Player In 2008

Tim Henman says forget the numbers. Its only a matter of time before the numbers catch up. I think he tells it like it is. What do you think? check out this interesting article from him. What more does Nadal need to prove this year. he has 6 titles already and 2 of them are the monster slams--Roland Garros and Wimbledon. this is one of the most difficult achievements in tennis. Last time it happend was nearly 30 years ago. also when was the last time somebody won Roland Garros, Queens, and Wimby?

By Tim Henman
Former British number one

Rafael Nadal's victory over Roger Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon men's final is the best match I have ever seen.

There is no doubt about that. The way that it ebbed and flowed with Nadal dominating, Federer hanging in there and the rain delays, I simply don't know what more you could have in a tennis match.

I cannot think of a better match in history, everyone was talking about last year's final being the best ever, but for me Nadal's win is the best match I've ever seen.

And the fact it came in a Wimbledon final makes it extra special.

I think the world order has changed and it's just a matter of time before it is recognised in the rankings

Tim Henman
It's so tough to pinpoint one area where Nadal won it. There was barely anything to separate them; it just came down to a question of the Spaniard's endurance and his sheer determination.

I think the world order has changed and it's just a matter of time before it is recognised in the rankings.

Federer remains as the world number one, but Nadal has been the best player in the world in 2008 and is sure to end Federer's incredible run as world number one. Nadal isn't top of the rankings yet because it's measured over a 12-month period but I'd be very, very surprised if it doesn't happen.

It's going to be a very long road back for five-time Wimbledon champion Federer. Wimbledon is the tournament he cherishes more than anything and this defeat will hurt.

He is too good a player not to bounce back from this, but it will be tough especially following his heavy loss to Nadal in the French Open final a few weeks back.

606: DEBATE
Well... what can be said about that match. It had drama, excitement, rain and tears!!

He doesn't need to change anything in his game; it will be psychologically that he will have to recover.

As for Nadal dominating Wimbledon over the next few years, I don't think he will win five in a row like Federer has, but he will be extremely tough to beat.

The way he has adapted his game and made improvements on grass has been a real joy to watch.

His character is such that he will continue to work hard, progress and improve.

And that is a scary thought for men's tennis.

Welcome back.
Nadal has so fewpoints left to defend, he should reach number 1 soon even if Fed defends all he has to defend.

its good to be back black adam. i am not entirely certain that the clay monster needs to risk any serious problems with his knees for now. he can have the #1 ranking in time. what is far more critical for him now is to protect his health and his knees. health before anything.

he is stubburn so i am sure he will give all he has to try to make some tracks on the miserable hard courts.

the best strategy for now appears to be just protect those knees and defend his points if possible. and keep making small, incremental improvements in his game. the #1 rank will come in time.

thanks old friend tenniszen. i rather just see him healthy and fit for 2009.

i worry about those knees on the hard courts. the knee issue has been lingering for a year now.

there is just no need to sacrifice what he has going on clay and grass for the sake of trying to be a hero on hard courts. the #1 ranking can be had anyway with a little bit of strategy.

he is not exactly the worst player in the world on hard courts and the new Nadal is a little different anyway. he has tremendous confidence and he is quite sharp off the ground. he has transformed his thinking and his game in the last 4 months. he still needs to play it safe and not take too many chances with those knees.

Saying Rafa is the best player this year is like saying that the night is dark because there is no sun in the sky.... didn't expect nothing better from Tim. No 1. ranking is becoming more and more ridiculous. Fed has Estoril and Halle alone, if I didn't know better, I'd say computer got broken...

Nadal will look to peak and save himself for USO... Still, if he gets a chance, he'll take what he can.

btw - welcome back CD.

reliability...

thanks Vida. i am back to torment the Federereeeeeeesians who are in a constant state of mourning now anyway.

If Fed doesnt get this title in Toronto, it will be yet another pschological hit that he cant really afford to take.

as for the Clay Monster, like i said, the best strategy is to just take care of his health. he has a very busy year. the olympics will be taxing since its hard courts and he is playing both singles and doubles.

he also has 2 davis cup commitments. one of them is in september at home against the americans. lot of tennis to be played. its best to protect those knees.

Good to have you back mate! I missed you over the Wimbledon fortnight.

I agree with you here, he has won two slams and had a great run so far this season so he will be a deserving number 1 if it happens.

Would still like to see him prove himself on hard courts though. I think it will be tough for him after this season's heroics so far, but we'll see.
