Worst Line Calls

I have just been watching Serena Williams vs. Jennifer Capriati from the US Open 2004. In the first game of the 3rd set, the absolute worst line call I've ever seen occurred. The ball was a mile inside the line, not even on the line, and it was called out, eventually causing a break of serve.

Can any of you recall some of the worst calls you've ever seen, ideally pointing towards video clips if they exist? I'm curious to see if any call exists that will outdo the one I just described, above.

Re: Worst Line Calls

Henman-Hewitt at Queens 2006.

Henman hits a superb backhand DTL winner to save the third of three break points against him in the third set, but the line judge, intimidated by Hewitt's stare at him, comes up with a late 'out!' call- the score at the time was 3-6 6-3 *2-1 30-40, and Henman didn't win another game.

Horrible decision, and if hawkeye was present then Timmay would have got to deuce and maybe gone on and won.

Re: Worst Line Calls

WTA or not, there's really not a worse one I can think of than that Serena/Capriati call. Absolutely outrageously awful.

Roddick vs Hewitt US open 2001. Roddick serving. Roddick shot was clearly landed on the line. Line umpire signalled it in but the chair umpire.(the umpire was on the far side of the court) ruled it as out.
Roddick wen't mad and called the chair umpire an "absolute moron" and he was penalized a point to give hewitt two match points which hewitt immediatly converted.

Re: Worst Line Calls

Henin-Clijsters, Australian Open final (2004 or 2005 )

Clisters made a smash on break point that was inside the line and the linejudge didnt call it out, but Sandra de Jenken (probably influenced from the call from Henin aka. little bitch) called it out. Clisters had the momentum before that point, after that she lost it

Oh, wow. They actually talked about that one after the call in the Serena/Capriati match.

Yeah, I've yet to see one. It was astounding. It was actually miles inside the line. It didn't even touch the line, not even close. Pretty hard to comprehend how anyone could call that out.

That's definitely the worst call I've seen on TV. Remember that the linesperson called it correctly; it was the utterly incompetent chair umpire who overruled the correct call, and didn't umpire again that tournament. Worst overrule in history, and played a large role in the implementation of Hawkeye.

Re: Worst Line Calls

I can't really blame the umpires. They got a tough job to do and they are humans and make mistakes. But the players gotta play with them. It is part of the game. Yelling and cursing will make things even worse.

Yeah, the replay showed the lines person calling it in. How on earth does an umpire overrule on that? They don't overrule at all half the time, and she overrules on a ball that's a foot inside the line!

Re: Worst Line Calls

I remember the Us Open 2003 SF, between Roddick and Nalbandian

there was a point clearly won by nalbandian that was granted to roddick, i think it was at break point

and after nalbandian was arguing with the rival roddick went all the way and said "is he through"?

anyway, the ball was in, and roddick won the match and then outplayed ferrero in the final to win his first -and only- GS title
