Hee! Marat dished out a breadstick!

Ward looks like he has some talent, his game looks like it would be better adapted to a slower hard court/clay. He was doing a good job moving the ball around and making Safin hit a lot of shots on the run until he lost his consistency midway through the third set. This might be enough for him to get a WC to Wimbledon. Was definitely more impressed by Ward than Goodall.

The guy was amazing in the first set, but then he kind of slipped back a little bit and Safin got a little bt better. Not a great match for Safin overall.

Was impressed with Ward. Hopefully Safin can get a few wins here and build on that. It's a shame that his rank has slipped so dramatically.

Very true. First set were just amazing. On the other hand Safin (as fast clay said) served well and played serve-volley exellent. Maybe Ward has got to much respect for Safin, especially in 3rd.

Ward was pretty good - you could see he trains out of Spain though, perhaps clay would have been his surface of choice for this match.

He played pretty well but tried to play it like a clay court match on grass and once Safin took control of the rally it was either winner or UE from Safin that decided it.

Re: Queens R1: Safin def. Ward 4-6, 6-1, 6-4

Queens crowd are way too passive - get behind the players FFS - Ward comes out knowing he has to break to save the match - the crowd titter a bit of polite applause and a lone voice bravely calls out "Come on James"

In Paris they may not fill the stands until teatime but at least the ones that are there give their players some oomph to latch onto.

Re: Queens R1: Safin def. Ward 4-6, 6-1, 6-4

Marat didn't take his opponent serious and had to lose the first set to discover that Ward can actually play tennis as well. The usual problem Mr. Safin has with guys outside the Top 100...

Set 2 was good grass court tennis by Marat. The rest - well, he can be happy he's in round 2. Now up your game against Gonzo, please! Davai!
