Who will be the first to win their second major, Safin, Ferrero or Roddick?

I think men's tennis needs one of these fine players to step up to the plate and win their second grand slam singles title as soon as possible and then give the multi talented Roger Federer some serious competiton in the coming years. Who do you think it will be? My guess is Andy Roddick but I would be happy with Marat Safin. And besides being a great clay court player Juan-Carlos Ferrero is a good hard court player thus he has a chance to win the U.S. Open and the Australian Open when he is healthy.

It's so hard to say since one's had an awful year of injuries and illness and another has had a year of being a headcas I think it could be any of them, and I all think they'll win a second major at some point relatively soon (next couple of years) - especially b/c they're all a threat for multiple majors - all three of them have made the SF at at least three of the slams, AND the finals of two!

Hi, the cat!

I really want to see multiple major winners among the top players - no flukes please. As a fan, I would like the unpredictability. But, of the three you mentioned, Andy seems most likely to pull another USO or an AO before the other two for the reasons bunk stated.

I'm still holding out hope for Hewitt to stay in the fray and Nalbandian to finally clinch a major. He's a contender on all surfaces. As much as I hear commentators talk about David's mental strength, I don't feel that he believes he can really get a major trophy. He always comes up just short. Now, he's dealing with health and fitness issues and I don't know how those will affect his confidence.

Roddick will win this years US open, so Roddick will be the first to win the second Grand slam.

Right now its looking like Roddick. He will be one of the favourites, if not the favourite to take out the US Open.
The others dont look like coming close to winning a GS in their present condition. I am doubting whether Safin will win another in his career, it seems like he does not possess the mentality to do so.

Well said bunk. I hope you're right about Safin, Ferrero and Roddick winning their second grand slam singles titles in the near future. Men's tennis doesn't need Roger Federer to have 6 grand slam singles titles one year from now while Safin, Ferrero and Roddick are still stuck on 1 grand slam singles title a piece!

Hi JMP! Long time no see. And I don't think there are any fluke grand slam winners in men's tennis. Thomas Johansson and Petr Korda deserved the respective Australian Open's they won.

I think David Nalbandian can win a grand slam singles title if he is healthy. And Lleyton Hewitt is certainly still in the grand slam mix.

I agree. Roddick will defend his US Open title unless an injury holds him back from doing that.

Definitely Andy out of the 3. Sad to say, but Ferrero couldn't even beat an unseeded player yesterday, so I doubt he would be getting back any time soon. Safin, I wonder when his desire will be back. Andy wants to win USO probably more than anyone else, and is in great shape, with great confidence. We will see how he will do in the next 2 TMS.

Re: Who will be the first to win their second major, Safin, Ferrero or Roddick?

like bunk says...these 3 guys have been to at least 2 major finals and a few semis which is a very good accomplishment....but it looks like roddick will win his 2nd major 1st

Q. As the older player, you don't feel like it's your role to go up to the younger players and talk to them first?

Re: Who will be the first to win their second major, Safin, Ferrero or Roddick?

Safin and Ferrero probably will win at least one more but they don't look to be in a position to win one very soon. Roddick, on the other hand, is playing well and full of confidence.

If I'm to hedge a bet on a true rival for Fed, I would say Rafi.

i feel it will be roddick, i think he has a great chance of winning the usopen. im sure ferrero will win another slam, and also marat if he puts his mind back into the game. but for the near future, i think roddick is the most likely, because of his form and upcoming events

Re: Who will be the first to win their second major, Safin, Ferrero or Roddick?

I'm going against the grain and picking Ferrero. The reason is because Ferrero is a bigger favorite on his best surface than the others are on theirs.

Roddick has a great chance to win the U.S. Open and has to be a front-runner, but Federer has just as big a chance if not bigger. An in form Safin would be close or equal. Then there is a whole slew of players who play really well on the hard courts and I'd consider them only a notch or two below them and can threaten them.

I think Safin's best chance is at the Australian, but he faces similar problems as above.

Ferrero, when he's at his best, is a clear leader at the French - maybe alongside Coria (though he has his obvious physical problems even when healthy). Obviously there are a lot of guys who can play well at the French, but I just think there's more equal footing at the hard court tournaments than the clay court tournaments. Yes, Ferrero hasn't looked good this year, but the French is a long ways away and I think he'll recover.

Re: Who will be the first to win their second major, Safin, Ferrero or Roddick?

I'd like to think it would be Juan Carlos, but my head says that Roddick is more favourite than him (and of course than Marat) to win both the USO and the AO.

Favourite players:

Nadal ~ Fish [Fisho] ~ Ferrero [Juancho] ~ Hewitt [Llautó] ~ Nalbandian

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yes. Victories must be celebrated always.
