Re: Equal prize money debate (Gilles Simon comments on it)

but womens tennis is by far the biggest and highest quality womens sport, so if they are going to be paid much less than the men then in the other sports women might as well get paid nothing

tennis is the sport where the men and women's standard is closer than compared to other sports

Tennis is Socialism, it's all equal. Women deserve that money.

No she does not. She's a big hitter as well (in women's terms)

She is a big hitter who plays graceful, elegant and entertaining tennis.

Just cos some women play ugly tennis (williams), don't think everyone does.

Let's be serious now.

But as for Simon's comments, like he said the fact that the men's final tickets are so much more expensive than the women's pretty much says it all. More people are willing to see the men, and they are willing to pay more for it. So in this sense, equal pay means women are eating into the money won by the men.

But the difference in appeal is not so huge that it is grossly unfair, so I guess it's a symbolic gesture to let women win the same in at least one sport. Maybe having mixed tournaments is also helping the viewership numbers in general.

No, don't fool yourself. Apart from her good results, the popularity and endorsements are mainly because of her looks not for her 'aesthetically pleasing tennis'!

she has won everything in tennis and its defo not just for her looks, if she had zero majors you think she'll be as popular and earn as much? Is a combinateion of looks and beautiful tennis.

don't fool yourself.

What part of 'apart from her good results' didn't you understand? IMO, it's clearly a combination of her results (like I already mentioned, again) plus her looks, but winning doesn't mean 'playing beautiful' or having 'aesthetically pleasing tennis', you know. It's something subjective, of course.

Re: Equal prize money debate (Gilles Simon comments on it)

This debate will never end but it won’t change anything that is for sure. Simon is not asking to change that, he is against combining the tour to become joint event and the main reason for that is some tournaments simply don’t have enough facilities to become joint event such as Rome. But they combine them anyway because Men event is a bigger draw than Women event and it then help out tournament by having Men and Women events in the same week other than in different weeks. Inevitably, it touches the sensitive issue of the quality of Men and Women tennis and therefore the issue of equal pay. People fixated on the equal pay issue and want Simon’s head for it. But he said it was not his priority in the council to do anything about equal pay, his priority is to change the lucky-loser issue and the calendar of 2014.

This from the interview on L’Equipe:
– Maintenant que vous avez été élu au conseil de l’ATP, votre premier cheval de bataille va donc être de casser l’équivalence des prize-money entre hommes et femmes?

– Non. Ma priorité, c’est de changer la règle des lucky-losers pour éviter qu’un joueur blessé ne vienne sur le terrain que pour prendre son chèque puis abandonne. On pourrait lui donner 75 % et laisser les 25 autres à son remplaçant. L’autre priorité, c’est changer le calendrier pour 2014. »

To me, the only solution is to not have joint event, then tournament will pay their respective tour whatever revenue they generate. If WTA tournaments made more money than ATP's, Women will get pay more than Men, and no one will have issue about it.

Obviously as williams play ugly tennis. Maria plays the most beautiful and elegant tennis in the womens game.

Players like tsonga play attactive tennis in the atp, murray plays ugly tennis.

That's your subjective opinion which nothing to do with the topic at hand. I think that Sharapova's and Tsonga's tennis is very ugly while Murray plays much more beautiful and interesting tennis, so what now?

Monaco - Del Potro - Nadal - Wawrinka - Robredo - Simon - Berdych - Dimitrov - Chardy

Don't forget her beautiful voice when she plays tennis. It's the most stunning sound to ever grace the ears of tennis spectators. She should do some opera.

Robbie Koenig agrees with Gilles Simon on the prizemoney

Does anybody else listen to the sky tennis podcast? Robbie Konig's great on comms. Not sure about his views on the prizemoney thing.
