Federer v Sampras: The rivalry that never was

I don't know about the rest of you but I find it a great pity that there was this generation gap between Roger and Pete as I believe it could have become one of the greatest rivalries in the history of the game had they both been playing in the same era.

The have met only once- in Wimbledon 2001 Rnd of last 16- Federer won in five, but he was an up and coming player at the time who had not yet established his current mental prominence, and Pete was in the twilight of his career. I rue the fact that they did not meet more regularly, and inevitably, not when they were both at the peak of their powers (Pete of 94 v Roger of 04).

I know there have already been plenty of debates about which would win had they played each other when both were at their best, but still it would have been an interesting confrontation IMHO.

Couldn't you pick any two players of different eras and say that?

Well, I suppose you could but it's just that these two have the most complete games of all the other players in different eras, which is why I think it would have been a particularly compelling ravalry.

More so than Laver-Agassi or Emerson-Lendl though?

I suppose my point is that there are a lot of rivalries that never were. If I have a point. I have a huge headache right now.

Sampras and Federer have similar styles (in terms of tennis, but also personality), so I'm not sure it would have captured the fans like Sampras/Agassi, Borg/McEnroe, etc.

I'm sure Pete would have owned this rivalry. Huge serve, impecable net game, that makes life hard for Roger.

Andy Roddick.Fernando Verdasco.Richard Gasquet.Tommy Haas

I don't think we can count Roddick out... He has improved a lot... I have a feeling that he will also defend his US Open title

Here comes Hard Court season...

PAW Singles Ranking - 396
TITLES (TMS Rome 04', Rolland Garros 04', Wimbeldon 04')
RUNNER-UP (Rosmalen 04' US Open 04')

The truth to that is, I'm really not so sure- and this is coming from me, at the time a true Sampras die-hard fan.

But then again, if the final today was anything to go by, players who can consistently serve big against Fed can trouble him.

In terms of styles of contrast, true, this may not have been the most attractive rivalry- but in terms of head-to-head (lets call it "virtual" h2h) I don't think any one player would have completely dominated the other- which is why I think this rivalry would have been so fascinating if they were both of the same age group.

Had Roger played peak Sampras today I doubt he would win a set but then again Roger didnt produce his best tennis.

Yep Wyvern, Rogi was only great in patches today but the patches came along more often in the 3rd and 4th sets. Pete had tough finals as well. There were times he didn't play his best but still was able to win in the long run. Rogi showed what a true champion he is.

It's your opinion, personly I think it's very spectacular to see. I'm admirative, these guys are simply magic, they come from another planet.
But they are not Schumacher, they don't win the grand slam, so they have flaws, and there is concurrence.
