Question about current rankings

I was just curious about current rankings...after Estoril, which Fed won, he actually lost points and Novak, who didn't defend his title didn't lose any points. What am I missing?

Novak Djokovic Rafael Nadal

David Ferrer - Leyton Hewitt - David Nalbandian - Marcos Baghdatis - Janko Tipsarevic - Tommy Haas

Re: Question about current rankings

The fact that with the change in Calendar this year, points for last year's tournaments are not coming off at the same time as this year's tournament is being played. For instance, last week, last year's MC points dropped off, this week Barcelona's points are dropping off, and so forth.

In other words the points drop off after 52 weeks regardless of when the tournaments are played.

I don't know if this has been discussed to death but I think that's pretty dumb actually. Why should a player lose points if he hasn't had the opportunity to defend them? Or, if a tourney was pushed up a week, why should a player get points for playing an event twice?

because it's easier to manage when you take into consideration the week a tournament is been played rather than the tournament.

I think it makes sense. The rankings are meant to reflect your performances over a 12 month period. It would become unnecessarily complicated if you tried to do it any other way. How would a player feel if they missed out on getting into the French because a fellow competitor earned points from a year and 2 weeks and he only earned them from a year. You defend your points from that week, not a particular tournament.

It has been discussed tons of times and the rankings are fine as they are. Rankings are based on the 52 week period and not based on tournaments. A player can only carried his points earned at a certain tournament for 52 weeks otherwised it will drop off. If you did'nt take them off, some players who won a tournament that was abolished the next year wont lose his ranking. AIf that happens, some players could reach 20000 points after 10 years of playing.

This year's schedule of points: http://stevegtennis.com/thisweek+.htm

Best twitter posts of the epic match:

@dougrobson - Whoever is supplying Mahut with hair gel needs to ink a sponsorship deal now.

@Wimbledon - FYI, with @Wimbledon live scoring devices, please add 50 to the games in the fifth set of the Isner v Mahut match.

@HolterMedia - Nice to see that a three-day test has come to tennis here @wimbledon.
