Estoril: Federer beats Gil 64 61

Good first set from Gil, but it all went downhill after the rain delay in the 2nd

Gil is pretty solid on clay, hopefully he can make the transition to the ATP clay circuit

Peter Polansky
Nestor - Chvojka - Pospisil - Raonic - Peliwo

Re: Estoril: Federer beats Gil 64 61

Fed was getting fed up with all the rain delays so he wanted to finish it fast after that last delay.

Can't say much about this one as I only saw the middle part between rain delays (from 3-2 in the first to 1-1 in the second). The two service games Federer lost were a couple of the dumbest breaks I've ever seen, but he did play well to break to win the first set and I guess Gil never had enough game or belief to really trouble him, considering how quickly he slipped away after breaking at the start of the second (he didn't win another game, in fact).

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Like I Said, this wasn't Gill having a let down, it was Roger smacking winners from everywhere on the court, both feet planted on the baseline, he hit like 5 or 6 winners in a row at one point. There was nothing Gill could do at that point

I didn't see the first set so I can't say, but he definitely played very well in the second.

Match divided into three sections by two rain delays.

First part: improvement on last two matches.
Second part: not concentrating and just dropped his level.
Third part: wiped the table with Gil, with incredible tennis.
