Roddick vs. Sjeng, sure thing or unsure?(Sjengster stick up for your boy!)

I saw Sjeng this morning on ESPN and he's really cool. He's witty, he has a good sense of humor, and he gives alot of credit to Andy. He doesn't sound like he even thinks he can win. They asked him what he needs to do to win and he said "Andy needs to play poorly" lol

So is this a sure thing or is there anything Sjeng can do to trouble Andy, besides hope for a Roddick implosion?

Sjeng can be lackadaisical in his comments

well, needless to say, i hope he loses

With each passing season, I discover new reason
SAMPRAS --> Rios --> KUERTEN --> Kafelnikov -->
Federer --> Hewitt --> RODDICK --> GONZALEZ -->
NALBANDIAN --> Benneteau --> Davydenko --> Mathieu -->
TURSUNOV --> Mantilla --> KIEFER --> NADAL -->
Karlovic --> Odesnik --> Stepanek --> Monfils -->
??

Schalken is a really cool, down to earth guy, but he doesn't stand a chance. I suggest that he simply faxes Roddick a walkover to save everyone the bother.

It's a shame how badly the Dutchman matches up against the "Kid", because he is oddly entertaining to watch despite the didactic nature of his stroke production. He was whipped in 79 minutes at the Australian Open, so on grass I'll give him about 100 minutes.

Re: Roddick vs. Sjeng, sure thing or unsure?(Sjengster stick up for your boy!)

The problem for Sjeng is that the two things Andy has improved the best are his backhand and his return. So he can now attack Sjeng's serve better than he could, and he can stick with him in backhand rallies since Sjeng's is so good. But the worst thing is that he already sounds beaten. He sounds like Mardy Fish sounded before he played Roger in Halle - he's basically just trying to avoid being embarrassed. Poor guy, I like Sjeng a lot!

I am sure Sjeng is a swell guy, but the constant public self-dismissing is just too much. It's not funny after a while. It's unattractive, I cant support that

I think schalken will get trashed.

I miss: Ivan Lendl, Korda, Novak, Bruguera, Rios, Kucera, Courier, Mantilla, Costa, Santoro and Ferreira.

Good luck to:

Gaudio, Murray, Florian Mayer, Chela, Nalbandian, Radek Stepanek, Volandri, Youzhny and Verdasco.

Sjeng is a great guy.

I still have this funny mental image of Andy standing on a mattress waiting to catch Sjeng. Sjeng is a big guy.

He's not trying to be funny. He wants to win and if he think he has a chance, he'll say it out loud. He just won't shout it from the rooftops, cuz he likes to play from the underdog position. Sjeng is just a guy who seems to know exactly what he's capable of.. He always said that he can beat a lot of players, he can handle most players in the top 20 too, but there are always one or two guys, right now their names are Federer and Roddick, that he will just not win from (according to the man himself)... That's not self-dismissing, that's being realistic,...

Re: Roddick vs. Sjeng, sure thing or unsure?(Sjengster stick up for your boy!)

I agree with Mrs.Guga and Bunk, which is sorta why I started this thread in the first place.(besides boosting my post count, lol).

Don't admit defeat until after you have lost! In the proud words of Sir Winston Churchill "Never give in! Never give in! Never, never, never. Never -- in anything great or small, large or petty -- never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense." (thought it fit, with it being in England and all)

Trust me Sjeng(if you are reading this) admitting defeat until being victorious doesn't work. When you look at the most famous upsets it because the guy who was the underdog said "I can do this", and it was everyone else that said "you have no chance". It's not good for tennis, and it's not good for you (Sjeng) to do that. You can't win with a lack of confidence.

Snoop, hello-- I am not saying he was trying to be funny. I felt that alot of people were interpreting what he is saying as cute or something. What I mean is, it sounds "cute" at first, then it's kinda-- pathetic, in honesty. I'll take your word that Sjeng is a guy who just speaks his mind 'cause I am not gonna pretend I know who he is. But personally, he sounds just pessimistic. That's why he sounded self-dismissive to me in a sport where anything can happen. There are some very honest players, like Federer. But it appears Sjeng's honesty is just too dark for me to handle

84.62% of MTF posters that participated in this pole think that it's yours to lose Andy. So think about that tomorrow....no pressure...no pressure...

Didn't mean to put words in your mouth that you didn't (mean to) say.. it was just that it came across a bit harsh.. like it was just an attitude by Sjeng, like he was saying he was gonna lose to justify his loss in advance... Just wanted to point out that (being dutch and all) I've seen numerous interviews with him.. and even though I don't know him in person, he seems to be honest when he says he really doesn't know how to beat Roddick. And Roddick and Federer really are the only ones he says this of.. when on top of his game, he can beat the rest of them. It's just either the enourmous serve or the all court play to perfection that causes him major problems... Well anyway.. if I missunderstood your previous post, sorry . Just wanted to stick up for my countryman, of who we all clearly know that he's gonna get his ass kicked tomorrow
