Haas out of Olympics, Davis Cup

Haas out of Olympics, Davis Cup

FORMER world No. 2 Tommy Haas will not play in the Beijing Games and has withdrawn from Germany's Davis Cup quarter-final against Spain later this month.

Haas, who has dropped to world No. 36, recently withdrew from the ATP tournament in Miami citing problems with his right shoulder as well as suffering with a virus.

To protect his shoulder, on which he had an operation late last year, Haas has also ruled himself out of Beijing.

Haas insists he has no choice but to rest and miss the Davis Cup clash.

“The decision to withdraw was difficult, but my doctors advised me to take a long break,” Haas said.

Germany's Nicolas Kiefer, world No. 51, will be fit to play in the Davis Cup, but the loss of Haas is a blow against a Spain side containing the likes of Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer when the sides meet in Bremen between April 11-13.

“Against such a Spanish team, we can only be the under-dogs, but with the support of our home fans and the speed of the surface we have to be positive,” said Germany captain Patrik Kuehnen.

The Spanish team includes Nadal, world No. 2, and Ferrer, fourth in the ATP rankings, plus Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco, giving 2007 semi-finalists Germany a mountain to climb.

Kuehnen will also be without doubles specialist Alexander Waske, who is recovering from a hand injury.

Haas is still in the entry list for Houston. Hopefully, it's only a matter of time until he withdraws.

It's not often I agree with Bilbo, but that would be the best for Tommy for sure.

You endlessly complain about ballbashers but keep telling a player like Haas to retire and then say expected when he beats top 15 players.

Re: Haas out of Olympics, Davis Cup

I'm not quite sure what the article says -- does it imply that he will be out until at least the Olympics or just that he will take a break and doesn't play the Olympics even if he starts playing other tournaments again before that?

The latter. He needs more/longer breaks to rest.

His favorite clay tournament? No way. I hope we'll see him in Munich and Hamburg.

Re: Haas out of Olympics, Davis Cup

Difficult situation for Germany, Kohlschreiber, Kiefer, Mayer, Petzschner all horribly out of form, Becker isn't in great form either.

I think he'll show up in Munich if only to visit family members who live there.

And not appearing in Bremen, but then playing in Houston only a few days later? That wouldn't look too good.

How is he out of form? He has easily won Besancon doubles and had good scores in Napoli this week.

Re: Haas out of Olympics, Davis Cup

Petzschner is in a good or normal form, but to win against Nadal & co we need a Kohli or Tommy in good form..

Louk Sorensen - Michael Berrer - Philipp Kohlschreiber
