Malisse takes out Haas 36 63 62 64

This is Malisse's first true win over Haas, who he's never beaten except the one time Tommy retired.

Tommy Great fight, though.

Re: Malisse takes out Haas 36 63 62 64

congrats Malisse!
his play was too consistent in the deciding moments.

well, Tommy... he was too unconsistent and didn't take his chances. Had tons of breakpoint that he wasted because he played the wrong ball at the wrong moment.
During such points you see why he didn't play tennis for 15 months. He has to work an that, but I have big hope left that he will improve and improve. Just look at his serve, the people who have followed his matches right from the beginning know what I'm talking about.

His 1st serve sucked at the beginning and his 2nd serve was even worse. In April his 1st serve got stronger, but his 2nd serve was still poor and not really good enough. And since Halle Tommy serves again at top speed around 210km/h and his 2nd serve is really much harder and better placed.

He just needs more matches and constant work. I've said it in his forum some week(s) ago that his relationship with his coach (and maybe even some more people around him) is not the best one and that I personally see some changes in near future.

While his coach Red Ayme was still in the US, he said that he feels really good having Patrick Kühnen, the German Davis Cup, captain around him. They prepared some days before Halle for the grass season and I think it was good work. They both said that also.

If he gets resolved the problems in his environmanet and continues to work, he will raise his ranking more and more. I think we will see him definitely again in the Top 20. IMO just a matter of time, he has the full arsenal of shots and as he said himself, he doesn't even think he will be back at 100% like he played back in 2002 at the end of this year.

Carlos --- C'MON Lleyton!!! --- Kiwi!!! --- Jürgen --- Juan

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

Neely, was Tommy outclassed by Malisse?? Because Tommy was outplayed by Dupuis for most of the match.

Do you think he can ever achieve anything on grass or is his grass simply not suitable for the surface?

Malisse Recovers From Poor Start

Friday, June 25, 2004

Deceptive is the only way to describe Xavier Malisse. When he stepped on court to play Tommy Haas, no-one would have guessed he would win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Littered with errors, his first set performance brought back harrowing memories of his first round defeat at The Championships last year, where he looked lethargic. This was again true today when he let his German opponent steam ahead to a 5-3 lead. If he was not being foot faulted, he was frowning with frustration and kicking his racket around. Instead of re-focusing, he grew angry and shouted to himself.

Haas, who endured a five-setter in his previous round, was quick to capitalise on Malisse's unstable frame of mind, taking the set 6-3 after 26 minutes. It was hard to believe that the Belgian on Court 3 would even have a sniff of the semi-finals, a position he found himself in 2002, unless he improved his concentration.

But the pony-tailed chameleon had the crowd fooled and at the start of the second set his natural flair and ability began to emerge - namely sizzling cross-court drives that left Haas bewildered at the net.

Only now was he looking like the player from 2002. His effortless ground strokes worked to secure him a break and 4-2 lead in the second set. Slowly his attitude and game were improving, Haas on the other hand was in decline.

Serving was proving a headache for the German who began missing first serves and double faulting. This flaw had plagued him in his first round match against Frenchman Anthony Dupuis and, although it looked as though he had shaken it off in the first set, pressure and an increasingly confident opponent provided a breeding ground for errors. In the end it was to be the Belgian's day.

yes, Tommy played too many bad shots at the deciding moments and at some moments he also "invited" Malisse to go for some pressuring shots. IMO the wrong shots and he didn't have the intuition to follow his shots to the net sometime.

Concerning that Malisse isn't either one of the most consistent guys going around, it must sound somehow hilarious but I would say that he was IMO more consistent than Tommy whenever he was down 0-30 or 15-30 or every else moment when Tommy could get a chance on Malisse's serve.

don't know who often I my head against the wall because Tommy was too passive or made life himself more difficult than necessary because of bad shot selection.

Tommy has the full arsenal of weapons, give him time to learn using them at the right time...
