But do any of the other young Americans he came up with have a chance to reach his level? Mardy Fish??

Re: So Roddick panned out ....

Oh Mardy has the natural talent, in my opinion, and his problem is still between his ears to some extent. Right now, Mardy's game hinges on his serve. When he gets his first serve in, he plays a good point. When he misses his first serves, he makes more errors and has more of a problem with his mentality. Mardy just kinda seems easily distracted. Plus he's had a lot of injury problems lately. When I saw him in Houston I thought he didn't look like he was in great physical shape. Then he had the hip injury and his shoulder seems to bother him whenever he plays a lot. If every time he plays two solid weeks in a row he has shoulder problems, that doesn't bode well. I love watching him play for both his game and his personality (he's hilarious!) so I hope he can put it together. I think he's a top 10 player if he can get it all working at the same time and stay healthy.

Re: So Roddick panned out ....

ANy of the current Americans getting to Roddick's level, no way. I don't see them getting to #1, finishing the year #1, winning slams, winning multiple TMS events. The only player I'd give a shot to reach the top 10 and have a really good career is Fish, he's got the game but needs some fixing in the noggin. I see him winning maybe one or two TMS events if he's able to get it together, and also work on his fitness/conditioning. Dent can be a good player, but imo he'll never get himself into proper shape so I doubt he can do it. The rest aren't good enough, so I won't bother mentioning them. I think we'll have to wait a while for the next American to make a big splash and have a pretty successful career.

Re: So Roddick panned out ....

Mardy Fish is the next guy who should be stepping up to the plate, but his level of fitness is not as good as it should be (not to mention his hip problems) and he has a faltering state of self-belief from week to week. He can and should be beating the top players on a more regular basis, but psychologically I have little confidence in the guy. His game is not too far off the quality of Roddick's, but he lacks the robust confidence and all-round ruthlessness that his compatriot has in spades.

Re: So Roddick panned out ....

The guy who has the best chance is definitely Fish. He just needs time to figure out his game since he has got so many options and once he puts it all together and has that self belief that he can beat the top players, then he definitely will be a top ten player, maybe even top five.

I agree with all above that Mardy Fish probably has the best chance but I cant see any of the others breaking into a consistent top 5.

Re: So Roddick panned out ....

Right now it looks like Mardy is the one after Andy, but even then, there's a huge gap that it's going to be a tough climb to have a really strong batch.

American men are in a gap... Everything holds on Roddick. I don't see another American in top-10...

Re: So Roddick panned out ....

Not right now. The current players aren't good enough to win a slam yet. Maybe when we get some new young guys then we can see someone else stepping. Fish is the guy after Roddick, but he isn't winning a slam any time soon, unfortunately.

BTW, talking about gap, look at the ranking of Switzerland.

I agree with you. They are a few guys in the junior that can step in. At least, Switzerland have a top player as oppose to some country like Canada.

Re: So Roddick panned out ....

Hey, at least there isn't a gap to begin with for Canada

I still remember watching Larose. He usually comes out playing well and then chokes and plays badly after that.

Re: So Roddick panned out ....

Yes, I watched Larose in person and caught his other 2 matches on tv. That was pretty much a flash in the pan few days for him, I doubt he can keep that high level of play up for a stretch of a few tournaments, let alone a whole year.
