The Bryans slap around Melzer/Knowle 6-1 6-4 6-2 to give USA 3-0 lead

Great effort there by the Austrians and the paying public got to see Knowle and Melzer as gimps in a public S&M clinic by the Bryan Bros.

Onto the quarter finals against the French for the Yanks.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

No surprise there, although I didn't think the Americans were going to be 2-0 up after the first two matchs. Who's gonna play at home if they do play the french ?

It will be in the USA and I think it will be played in North Carolina.

Melzer was funny saying in the pre-interview that we can do really well as our return of serves are very good, they were 0/1 from break points.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Re: The Bryans slap around Melzer/Knowle 6-1 6-4 6-2 to give USA 3-0 lead

It reminds me of serra before the Nadal match saying he wasn't gonna go in as if he'd already lost the match and that he really thought he had a shot, if not to beat him at least to bother him It's good to come on court with this kind of attitude but you can't end up looking like an idiot afterwards.

That's gonna be a tough tie for France, they probably would have been favourite at home . Gasquet's probably gonna beat Blake, but I'd still favour Roddick over him. The Bryans are also favourites but not overwhelmingly against Clement/Llodra. As for Tsonga's matchs it's tough to predict, since I have no idea if he'll be able to keep up his form. All in all I think we're gonna lose 3-2 as always...

Maybe the Bryans just played amazingly? People forget clay is their favorite surface

“The pressure they put on was enormous. They showed from the first game on that they are the bosses on the court. They made no mistakes and when they are on the roll, there is no hope,” Melzer said.

Austria outplayed in doubles

“We knew that our only chance was to stay in the match for a long time, but we didn’t and therefore were left chanceless. We tried everything, but we didn’t get a chance to play the ball. They were simply much better in every respect”, Knowle added.

Not amazingly, but good serving and good returning was enough.

DC was boring this weekend but yay Bryans for pulling out the win. It's a miracle nobody got killed on that sand dune surface.

France-USA in Winston-Salem should be a blast, I'm looking forward to that one. After that it's all downhill for USA.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Usually helps in doubles as you know.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Austrians were at the top of their games (clown-ish tennis) this weekend.

Yeah I'd probably make USA favourites 55-45. As you say, the Bryans wouldn't be overwhelming favourites, but they should be able to exploit Clement as the weak link.

As for singles, I think it is "realistic" to suggest that Blake and Roddick can win a rubber, each...although it is tough to pick, with any confidence, which of the Frenchies they'd beat.

Re: The Bryans slap around Melzer/Knowle 6-1 6-4 6-2 to give USA 3-0 lead

Great job team USA!

Bryan brothers lead U.S into Davis Cup quarters
By Jon Bramley

VIENNA, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Holders United States cruised to a winning 3-0 lead over Austria to reach the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup following a short exhibition of ruthless and often scintillating doubles play by the Bryan brothers on Saturday.

The Americans were unhappy about the state of the hastily laid indoor clay court at the Dusika Stadion but the world number one pair Mike and Bob Bryan could have played on a cowfield and still outclassed Juergen Melzer and Julian Knowle.

In the end, their 89-minute 6-1 6-4 6-2 demolition was a fair reflection in the gap in class between the under-powered Austrian pair and a fraternal partnership who have won all four grand slams at least once.

"I guess it was a pretty easy day at the office today -- and that's just the way we like it," Bob Bryan told a news conference.

"We broke them early in all three sets and that meant we never were under the gun. I never felt big time under pressure."

PERFECT FETTLE

U.S. skipper Patrick McEnroe, whose team are now heading for an April quarter-final against France or Romania, said the result left them in perfect fettle for their defence.
"This was a tough match against a difficult team on a surface we don't particularly like and to finish it by Saturday is pretty satisfying," he said.

After Friday's opening singles victories, the U.S. were clearly in no mood to linger on a court laid only at the start of the week which Roddick described as "terrible" and James Blake thought was "potentially dangerous".

Brimming with positive intent from the start, the Americans went about their business of systematically dismantling their opponents' relatively weak groundstrokes and services.
The first set flashed past in 25 minutes and although they were detained for 10 minutes or so longer in wrapping up the second, the Bryans easily broke the Austrians' opening two service games of the third to set up the inevitable victory.

The win left the Bryans with a record of only one Davis Cup defeat -- and that was three years ago to Croatians Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic -- in 15 doubles rubbers.

The result drew them level with John McEnroe and Peter Fleming as the most successful American Davis Cup pair in percentage of wins.

It also ensured that Roddick will probably avoid a court he detests and get the chance to rest an injured right knee on Sunday while the dead reverse singles are contested.
McEnroe said Roddick had "twinged his knee" and he would be unlikely to risk further aggravating it.
