Handful Of Blisters May Hamper Safin's Wimbledon Hopes

Handful Of Blisters May Hamper Safin's Wimbledon Hopes

A handful of blisters have forced Marat Safin out of this week's 's-Hertogenbosch grass-court event, casting doubt on the former No. 1's fitness for Wimbledon, which begins next Monday.

"The Russian player is still suffering from a hand injury from the French Open at Roland Garros," tournament organizers said in announcing Safin's withdrawal.

Roland Garros runner-up Guillermo Coria, who suffered an opening-round loss at Queen's Club last week, replaced Safin in the draw.

Blisters bursting from both hands hampered Safin in his fourth-round loss to David Nalbandian at Roland Garros. Despite having his hands taped and re-taped, by the end of the match, Safin looked like he had been playing with a grip made of coarse sandpaper that shredded the skin on his hands leaving them raw and red.

"I really suffered," Safin said after the loss to Nalbandian. "I was frustrated. I couldn’t play. It was a great opportunity to fight for another title. It’s a pity. I don’t know why it happened. I never had this problem before. I’m getting old."

A year ago, Safin was forced to withdraw from Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open due to a left wrist injury. The 2000 U.S. Open champion reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2001. Safin has suffered a pair of second-round setbacks and a first-round loss in his three other Wimbledon appearances.

Safin's blisters are the most bizare injury I have ever heard of in tennis. Don't get me wrong, I'm not doubting the injury or the severity. It's just that I have never heard of a professional tennis player having such massive blisters. It's astounding.

Very well put. I feel the same way. I don't doubt that Safin has something very wrong with his hands but I would have thought professional tennis players would be able to prevent such a thing getting out of hand. The way I see it whether it's Marat himself or the people in his support team someone was very negligent letting those blisters get to the level they got. Sure he played a couple of 5 set matches but so did several other players and they didnt get blisters. Fabrice had a 6 and 1/2 hour first round match and another 5 setter right after. He didn't get blisters.

I support......

lol star and Chris Seahorse... well I understand how got the blisters. What I don't understand is why they haven't gone away after 2 weeks! I mean we all get blisters... you pop it, put a bandaid with Neosporin on and it's gone in a few days Hopefully him being doubtful for Wimby is just speculation on the part of the article's author! But having pretty much no match play or anything is certainly not ideal

How the hell do blisters linger on this much. He prob used the blisters as an excuse because he didn't wanna play this week. He'll take the week off and he'll be fine for Wimbledon

I dont think these are blisters you get from playing on the monkey bars. I think these are really terrible blisters, his hands were absolutely atrocious... i dont know how one achieves those kind of blisters myself

With each passing season, I discover new reason
SAMPRAS --> Rios --> KUERTEN --> Kafelnikov -->
Federer --> Hewitt --> RODDICK --> GONZALEZ -->
NALBANDIAN --> Benneteau --> Davydenko --> Mathieu -->
TURSUNOV --> Mantilla --> KIEFER --> NADAL -->
Karlovic --> Odesnik --> Stepanek --> Monfils -->
??

Re: Handful Of Blisters May Hamper Safin's Wimbledon Hopes

His hands were raw and bloody. I've had blisters too but not as many and not as big. The problem with healing is that he can't continue to aggravate them and have them heal. When I get blisters say from raking the yard, I put on gloves or I don't use a rake for awhile. Marat had blisters and then he played the next day and made them even worse. Now he has the big places on his hands where the skin is new and tender and even more succeptible to blistering.

It's just very strange and perplexing.

But, I also think he will be ready for Wimbledon.

Re: Handful Of Blisters May Hamper Safin's Wimbledon Hopes

I've never doubted Marat playing at Wimbledon and still don't. These articles aren't based on things said by Marat so I don't take them seriously. He'll be there next week, I'm 100% sure.

Regarding what Chris Seashorse said, Marat's team sucks. I get the impression that he's surrounded by people who are just there for the money and the fame. He believes they are his REAL friends, but I've never seen them talk sense into him or do something good. Marat's diehard fans and perhaps the other fans too know that he can be hardheaded and only does what he wants, but still. If they were any good, then they would be able to make him listen to them.

Marat c'mon get some good people around you! I'd have to think that if he had a good physical person that he would've gotten these blisters properly taken care of in the week and a half he had in between RG and this week's tourney... if his people around him are as bad as you say, then wow.... I hope he gets his act together soon then or it sounds like they'll really hold him back from getting to the top top again.

Re: Handful Of Blisters May Hamper Safin's Wimbledon Hopes

It's a combination of a lot of reasons why Marat isn't and won't be at the top. This is a big reason imo and another one is that he simply doesn't want it as bad as the other topplayers. Federer, Roddick and Ferrero are so much more eager and love the game more then Marat.
