Gimelstob wins at Forest Hills, New York's new grass tourney at classic facility

Lol, yesterday's late news did a piece about Forest Hills and interviewed Gimelstob. That was more tennis coverage than the whole French Open. Well, any tennis coverage on basic news is a good thing.

BTW, anyone know how Gimelstob broke his leg???

Gimelstob wins at Forest Hills

June 12, 2004
NEW YORK (AP) -- Justin Gimelstob beat Dusan Vemic 7-6 (7), 6-2 to win the USTA Forest Hills Grass Court Classic on Saturday.

Just seven months after breaking his leg in November, the former U.S. Davis Cup player then took the doubles title as well. He and Brandon Coupe beat Travis Rettenmaier and Michael Tebbutt of Australia 6-4, 6-4.

``I'm almost back to my complete game,'' said the third-seeded Gimelstob. ``Winning like this came at the right time.

Gimelstob planned to leave for Wimbledon on Saturday night.

``I am not in the main draw,'' Gimelstob said. ``But I'm confident I can get through the qualifying and make the championships.''

Yeah seriously. I don't know how he broke his leg, but I promise it had to do with karma.

GO AWAY!

It's great to hear that they are playing tennis on grass again at Forrest Hills.

I guess it's nice for Gimmlestob that he won, but I wouldn't mind if he just retiered either.

Re: Gimelstob wins at Forest Hills, New York's new grass tourney at classic facility

Justin didn't break his leg, that story is wrong. He broke a bone in his foot last October at a Challenger in England. He had to have surgery on it in November and it's taken this long for him to recover.

I can understand why so many people don't like Justin because I didn't either, but I have become a little bit fond of him beginning with San Jose 2003 when he actually apologized to me for being rude to me the previous year. He really has made an effort to behave better and he knows that people think he's a mental case. He's earned a lot of fans with his work on the Tennis Channel, showing his sense of humor and his knowledge of the game. Yes, he can be VERY intense on court, but off-court he's becoming much more relaxed. I guess he's growing up finally...

Anyway, don't want to argue with anyone, I know everyone has their own experiences and opinions on players, but I did want to defend him a little and let you know that there is another side to him. I hope he makes it through W. qualies and has a good summer.

Best twitter posts of the epic match:

@dougrobson - Whoever is supplying Mahut with hair gel needs to ink a sponsorship deal now.

@Wimbledon - FYI, with @Wimbledon live scoring devices, please add 50 to the games in the fifth set of the Isner v Mahut match.

@HolterMedia - Nice to see that a three-day test has come to tennis here @wimbledon.

Re: Gimelstob wins at Forest Hills, New York's new grass tourney at classic facility

I read an article about him riding a bicycle and some woman hit him with her car? He got heas of gravel in his legs (EWW!!) and then had a fair bit of time off, but I dont remember if his leg was broken.. I was looking for Bjorkman articles at the time...

I spoke to Justin in 2003 (or maybe 2002, dont re member), because I knew Jonas played doubles with him. I've seen Justin play and he can act like a 5 yr old sometimes (as some other guys on the tour can!) but when I spoke to him for about a minute, he was really sincere So, I put him into a similar category to Gaudio & Fish. Lovely off court... but on court can be frustrating to watch

Re: Gimelstob wins at Forest Hills, New York's new grass tourney at classic facility

Gimelstob is such a joke on court. He could play tennis with a spatula and it wouldn't make any difference to the outcome. I remember when Agassi downed him 6-0 6-1 6-1 at the US Open in 2002, and Gimelstob was so intense during the whole match, shouting, screaming, throwing his hands up into the air and generally acting like he thought he was in the midst of some great contest.

The only good result of his I can recall is when Sampras took him out 4-6 6-4 6-2 6-2 at Wimbledon. Good first set, obviously, but at some stage Gimelstob made a big fuss over a Sampras ace he thought was out, and made an embarassment of himself. It was clear that he was not going to make a decent fist of the match from there. Headcase.

He's a spoiled brat. That's why we dislike him. He's so friggin' immature, and he has NO respect for his opponents.

Re: Gimelstob wins at Forest Hills, New York's new grass tourney at classic facility

I just know him as Serena's former mixed-tennis partner. He played with her at Wimbledon one year (didn't they win???). Anyway, she was frustrated at her own play and dusted her racquet frame along the court. He tried to calm her down. That's the only time I saw him play and I guess I don't see the "spoiled brat" part

Examples?
