Should Kiefer be fined?

Kiefer lost today in Halle, against fellow German Rainer Schüttler, in two sets. Kiefer was very disappointed that he lost and says he didn't reach the level he should have. Consequently, he cancelled his Nottingham commitment to rest in Hannover. This is on his official website:

That is his reason for not going to Nottingham. Am I the only one to find this reason unacceptable? It seems like a case of sour grapes, IMO. He should be fined for lack of commitment here, I think.

Re: Should Kiefer be fined?

depends on when the deadline is. If he pulled out before the deadline then even if it's crappy, he's within the rules. If he pulled out after the deadline then he'll pay a fine no matter what (save for injury)

Re: Should Kiefer be fined?

well, I don't know from what he should be tired or exhausted because he only played four matches in Halle (doubles included) and two rounds in Roland Garros before, but I was really disappointed because of his match today and I'm sure he is also disappointed because he played so badly in front of the crowd who wanted to see for sure a better match.

Concerning if he should be fined my answer is clearly "NO". Last year for example, he made the final in Halle and then retired from his first round match in 's-Hertogenbosch. And I think that is even worse.

So, of course, it's better not playing a tournament when you don't want to play and give other players who have interest in it the chance to play there.

Good decision, Nicolas! too many players do that, but at least he doesn't take away the main draw place for somebody else!

Carlos --- C'MON Lleyton!!! --- Kiwi!!! --- Jürgen --- Juan

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

well, he could also say "my wrist is hurting" and nobody could verify it if it is true.
Just because he is probably saying the truth, there is no need to fine him.

Re: Should Kiefer be fined?

The deadline for withdrawal is noon Eastern US time on Friday, which is 6PM in Halle... if he informed the ATP within 2 hours 34 minutes after his match he escaped the fine... I'm quite sure he did that...

No, he needs a "doctor note" from official ATP phisician to get a medical exempt. But it is unnecessary if he made his withdrawal by the above deadline, which he probably did.

thanks! yes, that's right of course... but still, instead of saying "I need rest, I feel exhausted and not well" he could also say "my wrist is hurting" or "my canary bird passed this afternoon" and withdraw from the tournament with this reason

so, again, I don't get what CooCoo finds so special about this reason as Kiefer could say ANYTHING to withdraw from the tournament if he did it in time until this deadline.

Re: Should Kiefer be fined?

Simple answer? No.

I don't really agree with his "why" for pulling out but I don't think that he needs to be fined for it.

Personally, I think he's having more a case of mental exhaustion than physical exhaustion. His attitude seemed like the "old Nicolas" to me in his post-match interview. I'm sure a lot of that is due to having to talk to the press almost immediately after losing but hopefully this week off will allow him to readjust his attitude again .

PAW 2013:
Munich - 2nd place
Halle - 4th place
's-Hertogenbosch - 4th place
GSTAAD - WINNER

Re: Should Kiefer be fined?

Well, Neely, maybe he shouldn't be fined, but the behaviour is, for a top player, pretty much unacceptable. If you don't want to play, then just quit. I don't see a valid reason for him not showing up.

I don't think he should be fined. Don't we all take a break from our routine once in a while???

Re: Should Kiefer be fined?

I'd say no and I'm not going to explain and write my thoughts on it because I'll need a break as well. lol
