He CAN definitely qualify but whether he will is another story. He is 102 points off the cut-off at the moment and you'd expect the cut-off bar to rise a lot after Wimbledon with much expected of Hewitt, Henman, Roddick and Nalbandian. He will have his work cut out if he wants to qualify but you definitely can't count him out at all.

Re: Will Ferrero qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup 2004?

The only problem for him is that there will be increased competition from other contenders behind him that should be pushing for the top 8 aka Agassi and Schuettler. He will have to deal with them after Wimbledon too, not to mention a couple of players that will fancy their chances of a mid-season push.

i voted no just because the best part of his season is behind him and because the people that make up the rest of the current top 8 have their best events yet to go.

but i wouldn't be surprised (pleasantly) if he does qualify! he could make some magic happen ie snag toronto or something.

Maybe Roger can win Roland Garros.......

Let's see what he does at Wimbledon as well (if he plays )...

Re: Will Ferrero qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup 2004?

* Consider the 04 ATP Champions Race (since Entry System won't get you in TMC)!

1st Federer, R. 501 (Winner of AO & his huge points already guarantee Fed)
2nd Coria, G. 448 (Close behind Fed in points & still likely to win more titles)
3rd Moya, C. 384 (Nice win at Rome TMS~ his form should hold to get him in)
4th Gaudio, G. 285 (Even if he's not Top-8 he'll still get 8th with WC for FO victory)
5th Safin, M. 281 (If he performs at Wimbledon & USO such as~QF then he can)
6th Roddick, A. 274 (Probably going to win another TMS in US hardcourt & USO?)
7th Henman, T. 268
8th Nalbandian, D. 252
9th Hewitt, L. 246
10th Hrbaty, D. 182

*@@* Therefore those Top-6 guys now will almost certainly quailify for TMC Houston barring an injury in Oct/Nov. So there are only 2-more spots up for grabs & I highly doubt Ferrero will get there (but he may finish Top-10). Probably Henman/Nalbandian/Hewitt/Agassi are most likely going to battle it out for the remaining berths. But I'm sure many will disagree with me.

Anyway Ferrero will bounce back strong in 2005! As he said "maybe this is my bad year"...>_<

Re: Will Ferrero qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup 2004?

I'm hoping Henman will actually make it this year!! Nothing is guaranteed with him especially as he fell out of the top 8 for the first time in the last week of 2002 Race to Shanghai. Moya i remember was 7 match points down to Seb Grosjean in Paris and the little Frenchie still couldn't put him away! But still may have done Tim good not playing MC because of his shoulder op. But still, I would like to see him qualify this year because with the current field, he could definitely beat most of them.

Re: Will Ferrero qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup 2004?

Yeah, OK, these are the almost definitive spots:

Federer, Coria, Moyá, Gaudio and Roddick.

I wouldn't say Safin is qualyfied yet. He can be very irregular. So there are 3 spots left for those players:

Safin, Henman, Nalbandián, Hewitt and Ferrero ("FIRST DIVISION")

and Hrbaty, Agassi, Kuerten, Pavel, Chela, Grosjean ("SECOND / POSSIBLE BIG SURPRISES DIVISION").

Since Safin, Henman, Hewitt and Nalbandián are all more than 100 points over JCF, and the clay season has gone, it's real difficult for him to qualify. But if his ijnuries stop he can do a great performance in the US summer and in Madrid/Paris as well. I don't see him doing anything big at Wimbledon -hope he proves me wrong.

actually, six match points (R16). Then he beat Agassi in QF, so he reached SF, which was what he needed to qualify.

Yeah i agree with you, Safin is by no means qualified. He hasn't done nearly as well as he did at the Aus Open and he still has half a season to go. At the rate he is going i'd say he will be pipped in the final few weeks but there again he is quite capable of winning a Masters title or the US Open which would effectively seal his ticket to Houston.

Sorry - 6 MPs. I stand corrected! Cheers for that. Still, it is too many MPs to blow especially when you are playing with the crowd on your side. From what i read, Seb lost the MPs rather than Moya saving them.
