ESPN: Men's French Open final TV ratings up from last year

Any hope that ESPN will change?

Associated Press
NEW YORK -- The overnight rating for the all-Argentine men's final of the French Open was up 17 percent from last year's final.

NBC's telecast of unseeded Gaston Gaudio's 0-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 8-6 win over countryman Guillermo Coria drew a 2.1 rating with a 6 share.

Juan Carlos Ferrero's straight-set victory over Martin Verkerk in the 2003 final got a 1.8 overnight rating with a 5 share.

Overnight ratings measure the 55 largest TV markets in the United States, covering nearly 70 percent of the country. Each overnight rating point represents about 735,000 TV homes.

Share is the percentage of homes with TVs in use.

We can always hope.

So much for logic that I've seen elsewhere that people would rather watch the WTA. Honestly, I think it's a matter of where the best quality Tennis is being played. Regardless if it's men or women.

PAW 2013:
Munich - 2nd place
Halle - 4th place
's-Hertogenbosch - 4th place
GSTAAD - WINNER

I don't believe it! When most of the dorks at ESPN can't even pronounce the players' names... and act as if nobody's ever heard of them...

Hopp Rogi! Go Gonzo! Allez Gasquet!

Re: ESPN: Men's French Open final TV ratings up from last year

The casual tennis fan has no choice but to say "WTF"? when they turn on the tv after two hours thinking the tennis match was off the air. Then they'll see Coria hobbling and they'll sit down to find out what's going on. Then their roommate will come in.

Roommate #2: You watching tennis?
Roommate #1: Yeah, this dude was hobbling around the court. Now he's running like nothing was wrong. The commentators think he was faking.
Roommate #2: Oh. (He sits down and watches a bit). I don't like that dude (Coria). He looks smug.
Roommate #1: He's supposed to be real good. He's like #3 in the world. The other dude is #44. At first, he was getting blown away. Then he told John McEnroe he didn't want to be there.
Roommate #2: Really? John McEnroe's still playing?
Roommate #1: No. He's commentating. Dude was scared, then they started doing the wave. It was funny. Now he's playing real good.

Anyway...This is all just to say intrigue brings the fans. Then they get to know the players, even if they aren't American.

There's an even more simple answer: a final that ends 8-6 in the fifth will get a better rating than a 3 straight sets victory.

It's just a comparison from last year, it's not hard to do better than Verkerk against Ferrero... 2.1 is nothing special.

Re: ESPN: Men's French Open final TV ratings up from last year

I think Coria really upped his popularity with US tennis fans after his gutsy performance in Miami against Roddick. It was the first time my wife had really seen Coria play, and now he is one of her favorites (although she could not bear to watch yesterday after he got hurt).

My only question is why does the thread title refer to ESPN when NBC broadcasted the final?

I got the info from ESPN tennis website
I think ESPN expected the ratings to tank, and it is remarkable that it did not given the fact the networks ignored mens tennis for much of the FO.
Again, this shows that fans just want to watch good matches, with or without Americans, period!
