Gaston to Bud: Coria was playing gamesmanship

When asked if Coria was playing gamesmanship, Gaston said "Yeah. He was cramping in the 4th set and now he's fine?" He gives a "yeah, right" look and shrugs.

I don't know. Why would Coria need to do that 2 sets and a break up? He was steamrolling until the "Wave" and the match entered went from boring to the Twilight Zone. Was he scared Gaston was making a comeback? Did he just want crowd support?

Maybe Coria just doesn't take in enough water. He had kidney stones in Miami, here he may have just started to cramp He didn't look in pain, though.

What do you make of Coria today? Was he injured? Did his gamesmanship come to bite him in the ass? Did he just choke from overconfidence?

He didn't exactly said that Coria was playing gamesmanship. He just said that Coria was cramping and then he was ok.

These guys don't like to give away points let alone sets. Coria didn't cheat, he just has some serious health issues. It will likely shorten and ruin what otherwise would be a brilliant career.

Re: Gaston to Bud: Coria was playing gamesmanship

This will probably be the hottest topic in MTF for the next 2 days.

I can understand during the match everybody is all worked out but the match is over, I somewhat wish coria supporters will stop saying Gaudio won coz he got lucky and Coria "haters" will on the other hand stop speculating over Coria's gamemanship by now.

Fact is it was a highly entertaining match and both players contributed to that.

But of course this is just a wishful thought

Shy: Bud asked Gaudio if Coria was guilty of gamesmanship and the above post was his reply.

Isy: Only the 5th set was entertaining and it didn't turn out the way it was supposed

The rest of the match was just strange.

I would say that the third set was the best

I will say the 3rd and the 5th are both entertaining. 1st and 2nd was a blow out for Gaudio and 4th was just bizarre.

but hey...strange can mean entertaining too

I mean gaston comment...that seems weird...if that's the case then Gaudio seems to have a real problem...

Bud Collins interviewed Gastion after the match.

Re: Gaston to Bud: Coria was playing gamesmanship

well but you have to read Guillermo's interview then...the doc gave him something that was going to take a few mins to take effect...so Guillermo was waiting for it to make effect...check his interview

I believe him, but people are going to question his gamesmanship because of his history. If it was anybody else, people wouldn't been that sceptical.

Re: Gaston to Bud: Coria was playing gamesmanship

I think the word strange aptly describes the overall match with a dash of entertainment and drama thrown in. While I hate to see any player hurt, I feel the same way about this match as I did about the Kim/Venus semi at Wimbledon '03 - Kim should have picked up the pace and finished Venus off. Gaston should have done the same. Coria is an excellent player. I wish him good health and great success in his career. But, Gaston seized the opportunity and won this contest.
