Best AMS Player of the Year

These are the standings (pre-Paris) for this coveted (okay, fine, it's something I made up) accolade. I have done it simply, most points from all AMS events put together, players who missed events through injury, bad luck. To qualify for my list players have had to make a minimum of one AMS SF or be in the top 20 in the RACE at the time of posting.

Nadal - 2330*
Federer - 2205*
Djokovic - 1905
Davydenko - 765*
Nalbandian - 725*
Roddick - 625
Gonzalez - 625
Ferrer - 620*
Hewitt - 585
Murray - 575*
Ferrero - 570
Ljubicic - 550
Blake - 540*
Canas - 533*
Berdych - 510*
Chela - 490
Moya - 450
Robredo - 350*
Stepanek - 320
Gasquet - 320*
Volandri - 300
Youzhny - 270*
Kiefer - 295
Baghdatis - 280*
Haas - 220*

Interesting that neither Ferrer, Robredo nor Haas, all top 10, reached any AMS semi's this year (yet). The other top 20 players to have failed in their efforts to reach an SF are Gasquet, Youzhny, Chela and Baghdatis.

The top acheivers were to be expected and a good result in Paris could well see Federer take top spot, neading to make up 125 it's likely that he will need to reach the final and see Nadal fall before that stage unless he wins the final against Nadal.

Hewitt has done surprisingly well considering his relatively few tournaments and interesting to see Ferrero as the tenth best in this regard considering his ranking.

At the time of posting those with an * by their name are still in Paris and have a chance to climb higher in this form of ranking. Blake anc Canas are already past Ljubicic, Blake equal with Ferrero. Murray has overtaken Hewitt and Roddick. Ferrer is past Gonzalez and Roddick.

Hope this is interesting.

If it weren't for Madrid, Nalbo wouldn't even be on this list
It shows the poor form he had all year, he didn't even reached a QF before Madrid.

Personally, I wouldn't count the TMC in this category but it's just opinion.

The TMC points aren't counted in those totals anyway because it is best AMS player of the year (Jan-Dec '07).

Re: Best AMS Player of the Year

The top 3 grand slam player's of the year for comparison would be:

Federer 740 (3700 ranking points)
Nadal 420 (2100 ranking points)
Djokovic 350 (1750 ranking points)

Fed is a super slam performer, just above-average AMS performer and very good MM performer.

There is room for just 4 players in the TMS semis. The players you have mentioned are Top 10, but they are not top 4, so I guess I don't see it as particularly surprising that they didn't reach any TMS semis seeing as the top 3 are consistently good regardless of surface, and Top 4 are good in all surfaces except Davydenko on grass. There is also the random element in each tournament (draw, weather, injury, etc) which leaves room for anyone in the Top 50 basically to show up in a semi. Whether it is a Canas or a Murray or a Nalbandian, those players are essentially just as good as Ferrer, Robredo or Haas on a given day.

Thanks for doing the maths, yeah it`s quite interesting

..My man Hewitt did pretty well to finish #9 on the list, but still he disappoints me considering he never plays certain AMS events

#Monte Carlo~~ DNP [only played once in 7yrs]
#Madrid~~ DNP [has never played there]
#Paris~~ DNP [only played once since 2002]
...
if Lleyton simply played a full schedule his surely be a Top-10 player again

he ceratainly doesn`t help his chances by missing the indoor season every year [2001 was the last time he played both Masters series]!!

FED only played 2 MM tourneys this year
..but that`s part of his genius
Rogi knows where the points are, & hardly bothers with MM titles because he knows they mean pretty much nothing in the long run

of course he plays the Swiss Indoors [home event] & Dubai [pseudo home]
