Federers second serve!

What happend to Federers second serve.
I don´t watch that much tennis, but I watched all of his matches in Basel and if I compare them to his Wimbledon matches I have to say, that his second serve got worse. I have some recordings from Wimbledon and it had a lot more spin to it and was jumping real high of the grass and he was winning some points by people not being able to return it.
Now in Basel spin was a lot less, although carpet court should take spin more no?
It is not really a weapon the second serve anymore. Anyone knows what happend?
Didn´t watch any matches of him inbetween though.
Hi all btw. This is my first post.

His 2nd serve was incredible at Wimbledon and throughout the end of 2006. It's regressed a lot since then.

Re: Federers second serve!

He always had an amazing serve on grass, just good on hardcourt and avarage on clay. As his serve is kind of slow but with great placement and spins, on grass it gets the extra speed it needs and its slice gets even more effective.

Re: Federers second serve!

I wonder because I remember Federer saying ones serve is only as good as the second serve why Federer doesn´t keep improving it. I think it is not only because of the surface, but just in general it is slower and less spin and variation and everything.

Nieminen had nothing to harm Roger. Roger didn't need to play his A game to win.

Re: Federers second serve!

Federer is playing a percentage game. against certain opponents, he knows he has to hit better second serves and so he does. But why take the risk against guys who federer knows he will probably beat with his regular game anyway.

There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers.

Re: Federers second serve!

Faster surfaces (indoor) does not respond to topspin as much. Also Federer isn't trying to expend as much energy (not just serve, but shots too) in these post-USOpen tournaments.

You know when his second serve was awesome good? Australian Open (responds to topspin well). He had a horrible first serve percentage there, but his second serve wasn't attackable so he started the rallies in a good position.
