St Petersburg QF: Marin Cilic (CRO) def Ernests Gulbis (LAT) 6-4 6-4

Both boys played really well, throwing in some entertaining rallies and S&V points - big serves and court speed nonwithstanding

Brilliant play by Cilic especially, kept his cool throughout the match. Served well, hit passing shots well... Good on ya

Gulbis channelled his inner Marat a little today - the racquet went flying a few times. His first serve wasn't working, he was unhappy with several line calls early in the first set and looked like he was stewing over them for almost the whole match. Needs to outgrow that

Marin
A lot of people on this forum think Cilic will never be a good player. And a lot of them think Gulbis is a great young potential. I agree about Gulbis, but Cilic deserves some more credit.

Re: St Petersburg QF: Marin Cilic (CRO) def Ernests Gulbis (LAT) 6-4 6-4

I was totally wrong about this match, in my mind Gulbis is stronger indoors and Cilic on the natural surfaces but today Cilic was clutch and he needed that result more than Gulbis, so well done

"Verdasco next will face Russian qualifier Marin Cilic who defeated Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-4, 6-4 in one hour 23 minutes to advance to his first semifinal of 2007."

ATP called Cilic a Russian

I willing to bet that neither of these players will be top 10. Ball bashing mugs, the pair of them.

cilic schooled gulbis today. i have watched the whole match and the main difference was return. gulbis has better serve, but marin was returning incredibly well. marin style of play is very similar to gasquet. very pleased and surprised how marin played today.hope he keep this level against verdasco.
