David Nalbandian's Best Chance To Win A Major: The Australian Open?

Should Nalbandian maintain his Madrid form and take renewed confidence from it do you think that the Australian Open is the one Grand Slam he has the most realistic chance of winning?

Obviously the French Open is owned by Nadal and Wimbledon and the U.S. Open are the domain of Federer so I think if Nalbandian is going to win a Grand Slam tournament his best chance will be the Australian Open. Between 03' - 06' he made the QF's three times and the SF's once and almost made the final in 2006.

The Australian Open surface seems like the most wide open of the Slams as it's not so slow that Nadal's game can dominant and not fast enough that Federer would be invincible (although he has been over the last couple of years).

I think that with the right mindset Nalbandian's game is best suited towards winning the Australian Open, should he win a Grand Slam tournament.

The new Plexicushion surface will be the same speed as the Rebound Ace, the only differences will be:

1. Won't retain as much heat.

2. Won't stick to the players' feet like the Rebound Ace did when there was hot weather.

3. Will be blue.

It won't be the same speed, the bounce will be lower than before.

As for the thread, it's a classic knee jerk reaction and as for Nalbandian he could win at any of the venues, if he plays to his top level of play and has a bit of luck go his way with draw, less likely to happen at Wimbledon or RG.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

He won his FIRST masters and already he's likely to win a slam??? He had his chances before, why is it different this time??? He won TMC which is probably even harder to win than masters title, and what did he do since then? I'm afraid that Nalbandian is past his peak. He had a GREAT week, but I'm afraid that it is his first and last AMS title. As for grandslam...very unlikely if you ask me. But hey, nothing's 100%.

Novak Djokovic Rafael Nadal

David Ferrer - Leyton Hewitt - David Nalbandian - Marcos Baghdatis - Janko Tipsarevic - Tommy Haas

His chances at all the slams are the same. You can nitpick and say he's got tougher competition here or he's had slightly better results here but at the end of the day it's up to him. He can win almost any match on any given day on any surface if he feels up to it.

And conversely, he can lose almost any match on any given day on any surface if he feels up to it.

Re: David Nalbandian's Best Chance To Win A Major: The Australian Open?

Both in 2004 and 2006 I had been sure he would win AO and was proven wrong.

In 2004 Federer was too strong for him. That year's Ao was probably the only time he breezed his way to the QF of a Slam, not droping a set and looking thiner and fitter than ever.

Last year's AO was a sad joke. He should have won that SF handily and I'm almost certain he would have won the title.

Should've, would've, the story of his career.

If he can brings this level to the AO then he's too strong for anyone, but I'm not willing to bet he will.

I'd rather wait those extra 5 seconds seeing those boobies bounce than watching some fatass kid burn away his bigmac meal.

I see him winning the Australian Open because he is fit.

his best chance to win a major is to hop into a time machine, pop back into september 2003, and spike Roddick's water bottle with something to give him the runs.

Re: David Nalbandian's Best Chance To Win A Major: The Australian Open?

i bet that fat dave will lax by season's end.. munching on chrsitmas fruit cakes and krispy kremes, so he'll be out of shape and conditioning once again by AO...

oh, to the poster who said nalby's got a good shot in wimby if fed gets injured, if you're implying that he's the 2nd best there after fed, then where was he all this time in wimby after 2002?

the thread starter is obviously on the band wagon...
