What's the Use of the Tennis Channel?

You would think that with the name "The Tennis Channel" they would be covering live tennis of all the tournaments all the time but instead we get stupid reruns of player interviews and profiles, all these oldies tournaments, team tennis and occasional squash and racquetball coverage....that's pretty much the bulk of the tennis channel, it's very pathetic and not even worth subscribing to it. We should all be watching every round of Metz, AIG and current women's tournaments right now. Sure they have stepped up on their grandslam coverage but that's only 4 times year, they should be able to bring us current tournaments every day of the week, if not, don't bother calling yourself the Tennis Channel. Is anyone else disappointed in their coverage of tennis?

About WTA, if it's the tennis channel, then it's right not showing their tournaments.

Re: What's the Use of the Tennis Channel?

it's called money. TTC is still relatively new new, and for whatever reasons it has had difficulty getting deals with cable companies and sponsors. it doesn't have the money to broadcast everything live. I love the tennis channel and can't imagine not having it. Hopefully they will continue to grow and continue to be able to purchase rights to these tourneys.

Re: What's the Use of the Tennis Channel?

I do enjoy having the tennis channel I must say. However, all the reruns ad nausea is pretty pathetic. I mean how many times did they keep showing the same Fed Cup matches? They played all the matches again the entire week a week after the Fed Cup semis were over. I mean yeah it's nice to catch some tournies and matches you weren't able to catch when they were first aired, but after the third time it gets boring and old really.

This is my biggest complaint too much reruns, and it would be a lot nicer if they at least aired matches of most tournies they broadcast from the quarters and on. Sometimes the most exciting matches happen early on in the tournies.

I agree with most of your complaints. However, I totally love their oldies and documentaries. I would have never been able to get a glimpse of the past champions had I not watched these documentaries on the tennis channel. I loved the Borg Saga, The Agassi story was great as well. I love the no strings special on the players daily routines and what not. I mean watching footage of Tilden, Budge, Sedgeman, Hoad, Rosewall and alikes was awesome, their classic techniques are just that classic and breathtaking.

Re: What's the Use of the Tennis Channel?

I really like it~~although I get tired of all of the reruns, etc. but they are getting better and show lots of live matches ESPN, NBC or USA (here) don't carry...
They will carry the Sampras-Federer expos.

And they are getting better!

Allez

Yup, which I will be watching tomorrow and Saturday night. They have live early rounds for RG as well as a few other tournaments. It's not that bad actually if you don't watch all the other crap that's on. Sometimes they show classics etc etc.

Re: What's the Use of the Tennis Channel?

They need to get rid of that Murphy douchebag and all those other stupid original shows and concentrate on live tennis and classic matches in the downtime. Masters Series coverage on TTC is fabulous, but the rest of the time the channel is pretty lame.

Re: What's the Use of the Tennis Channel?

The reason they have so many reruns is because they don't have enough original progams that they produce and there's a lack of live tennis coverage. If they beef both of those things up, they can fill their schedule with more substantial programming and less reruns. I'm not complaining of what they have right now, I just think they should add more stuff and show more live tennis so they don't rely on reruns all the time. They should have one purely instructional show that has a roster of top instructors rotating, a fitness show that's taylored for tennis player, show more classic matches from legends, produce more documentaries and original programming like when Tennis magazine had their 40 greatest, the Tennis channel should have done a special on that, expand on player profiles and iinterviews so we don't have to see the Max Myrni piece or John Mcenroe interview 642 times. if Money is really the issue, then how come they were able to negotiate on the slams, you would think getting the little tournaments would be easier.

Re: What's the Use of the Tennis Channel?

I agree, guy in sf, it's very disappointing. I am tired of the reruns, tired of watching the same match multiple times a day for days in a row.

I don't mind the other shows outside of live tennis but I think live tennis should be dominating their programming.

There were several tournaments played last week and the week before but I only saw one televised, unless I missed another. This week it's reruns of the same thing; some of the other tournaments are completely ignored.

Please. IMO, showing SF and Finals alone of any tournament on a Tennis Channel is ridiculous.

Don't even talk about Fed Cup and Davis Cup. Yeah, it's great to see the matches that led to the current matches but all day everyday? Personally I wouldn't pay for it if I had to. I'm just not impressed at all.

It was nice when I started watching first but it's become monotonous, now. ESPN, during their coverage of any tournament, especially Slams, rarely show the tv unknowns and it's pretty much the same on TTC. By the time you get to the Sf or F of a tournament it's most likely to be someone you know fairly well and if it's not, it's a rarity.

It seems we get more live tennis online these days.

Re: What's the Use of the Tennis Channel?

it is better than not having it by far...i enjoy it, but it far from what it could be, and I hope will be. The lead up to the French Open was superb. I like the fun bag checks...I do wish they'd get some newer interviews. I'm always to catch a bit of old matches. I like the highlight from tennis tournament, too

well when they show early rounds, it's everyone. I loved the lead up to the french with all the classic matches and yeah, the bag checks are interesting. Better than not having the channel I suppose. Really, just look at their lineup--it's not that bad
