Does anyone find it surprising?

Pat Rafter has only 11 career titles, and Jennifer Capriati only has 14.

Both are multiple Grand Slam winners, and have held the number one ranking.

They were at the top for quite some time, but won very few titles.

Lleyton Hewitt, Lindsay Davenport

Pat Rafter, Mark Phillippoussis, Rafael Nadal, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Sjeng Schalken, Chris Guccione. Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters, Serena Williams, Alicia Molik, Mary Pierce, Amanda Coetzer, Anna Kournikova.

Yes it is very surprising. If you don't have the mental strength to win titles, it goes without saying that it is unlikely you'll win a slam.

Some people only turn up for the slams. Better than the likes of Blake and Ljuba Truba who only turn up for MM tournies.

6 out of Rafter's 11 titles came in one season in 1998 as well.
Despite Sampras finishing 1998 as the year end no. 1, I've always thought that Rafter was the best player that year.

Re: Does anyone find it surprising?

jen has a great mental but she had a long period with trouble and everyone know it is hard to come back and to play a great tennis as you did before + when she came back hingis, venus, serena etc was playing their best tennis + after she came back at her best she has been injured a lot this can explain why she doesn't have so much title though she is realy talented and deserves more
the same for rafter..he deserved more but I think maybe his wasn't strong enough mentaly as valandri fan said...just my mind of course! he is a great champion anyway!

Re: Does anyone find it surprising?

Rafter's best tennis was during a very compressed period, as LeChuck says. I saw him play when he wasn't at his best, and he was just a middling player then.

Re: Does anyone find it surprising?

Pat was a late bloomer, so only a few years of really high quality tennis. Jen was a burnout, and when she finally got back near the top she became too injury prone.

Pat Cash won a slam and came pretty darn close in a few others, and I believe he only won a handful of titles.
