Federer doesn't have anything against Djokovic

Roger Federer's exclusive interview for Serbian daily "Večernje novosti". The source is here

Partial translation:

Federer: You all watched the finals. I was on a brink of a defeat, but I was saved by my experience and his errors. I knew what I had to do in particular moments in order to win. But if it went the other way, it wouldn't be unjust, because Novak played excellent tennis. His problem were the ups and downs, but I suffered from those as well in my early career.

What do you think about Djokovic's appearance in world tennis?
He's a great guy. Young, gifted and ambitious. A real refreshment in our "circus". Funny, charming, knows how to cheer everybody up during long boring tournaments.

You mean, the impersonations?
I've heard he's impersonated me, but I haven't seen that yet. Whatever he's done, I'm not mad, I find it interesting.

There were various reports on your relationship with Djokovic, various interpretations of your comments on our No. 1 racquet...
I wish all the best to Novak! I never underestimated him, I hope he won't underestimate me either. My only message is what I've told him in Geneva: he must practice as hard and as serious as he can. Constant form will bring him the spot he deserves. I never speak against anyone, just as I'm not interested what others say about me. I care for success and I do everything I can to be valued by colleagues, press and public.

Who do you consider your greatest rival?
The list says it all. Nadal is the second, Djokovic the third. Both are young, but Rafa is currently my greatest rival. But, i still go into every match with desire to win, with the same motivation, be it against the 2nd or the 100th player in the world. I'm also very well aware that surprises are always possible in sports.

...
Let's be clear, my primary goal is not to win 14 Grand Slams and surpass Sampras. My goal are the Olympics and the gold medal for Switzerland! I'm not even interested in money anymore, I have it more than enough for myself and my family.

...
I don't have an entourage. I don't need it. Mum and dad, except when there's some important golf tournament, are always on the stands, and also my best friend and the buddies from the hood. And of course Mirka, who's everything to me - manager, media representative, stylist. That's how it is, I'm not joking! You're laughing, but it's true...

I can see Feds focusing on Olympics in 08 and Davis Cup in 09 - my personal opinion. By then he should have the slam record.

Huh? Is he contradicting himself or was something lost in translation? Wasn't it all about the GS in the USO post-match interview? Or is he saying that he doesn't care about the GS next year and only the gold medal?

Re: Federer doesn't have anything against Djokovic

He said it about PRIMARY goal. I'm sure he won't be sad if he wins 14+ GS titles

And I'm not surprise about the gold medal thing, olympic gold is something that makes you unforgettable, not to mention that Switzerland doen't win many gold medals I think

Re: Federer doesn't have anything against Djokovic

It would make sense for him to concentrate on the Olympics next year since there's only one to be won every 4 years while there are 4 slams every year.

As far as I understood schorsch, he's calling Roger a two-faced liar (talking sweet about Nole, but thinking quite the opposite).

Federer wants to become a monk i think

The BIGGEST (borderline delusional) fan of players on General Message Board according to Forehander:
Grigor Dimitrov: FedererBulgaria
Borna Coric: Crowdmaker
Nick Krygios: Dan.
Tommy Haas: Leng Jai
Sebastien Grosjean: Myself
Novak Djokovic: Chiico (Leader of the No1e Cult)

Re: Federer doesn't have anything against Djokovic

I normally detect animosity when he talks about djokovic, here it wasn't at all. He's probably being nice for a serbian paper. He also said in his postmatch us open interview that he frankly thinks a lot about the slam record now, which seems to contradict the olympics comment a little at least.

Not liking traits in a person - in Novak's case the medical timeouts etc - doesn't mean that you can't recognise and even admire other things about them. I'm sure most of us have very good friends who have one or two things we dislike about them

Exactly. And, on this interview, is not as if Roger is giving over the top compliments to Nole too. However, I did get confused with the GS x Olympic Gold medal thing. I would love to read what was the question ...

Anyway. If Roger says he doesnt like something Nole is doing, Roger is an arrogant bastard. If he says there are things in Nole he likes, then Roger is a phony. I dont see people questioning how "heart felt" Nole's compliments to Roger were. It is obvious that Fed and Nole arent exactly best friends, but I dont think that they have problems against each other.

I guess people got disapointed that Roger and Rafa are friends, so now they are trying to create a "off court rivalry" between Roger and Nole. Hell ... if Nole was Spadea, I could understand!

ROGER FEDERER

COME ON MURRAY!
Andy Murray: USO champion! Roger Federer: LEGEND!

2012: A reminder to all of those who said Murray would never win a GS and that Federer was done winning GS titles!
