attendance problem at China Open because of cost?

i was looking at their VIP package, for 24 people, it costs $80,000 that comes out to $3333 per person, you can get a VIP Package for US open for that money. tickets for the final are $80-$100 you can get a all sessions pass for $450 for Cincy AMS

Re: attendance problem at China Open because of cost?

I'm generally a bit suspicious about tennis coming strong in China. Sure, there will always be enough sponsors for a big, heavily marketable annual event such as Shanghai, but I somehow don't think tennis should be overly appealing to Chinese - they're crazy about table tennis, and lawn tennis is about the same thing with significant imperfections: it's bigger, slower, and helluvalot costlier. Moreover, Asians are absolute all-time force in table tennis, whilst they are virtually non-existent (with honorable exceptions) in lawn tennis, which should also be a factor.

Strange and overly aggressive/optimistic marketing strategies are very common in China, maybe this is an example.

Very similar to the situation that occurred at the recent Cricket world cup in the West Indies. Organisers see what MEDCs are charging people to watch sports and think that they can charge the same regardless of the fact that their countries GDP is considerably lower. It makes no sense and completely ruins the atmosphere [entire stadiums were almost empty at the Cricket worldcup.]

Re: attendance problem at China Open because of cost?

The problem is also that besides the semis and final, tennis tournaments happen during the workday. Few everyday Chinese can afford to miss work to go watch sports.

The costs are ridiculous too, as the tickets aren't adjusted in accordance to local salaries. Who can afford to shovel out hundreds just for a one day session?

you'd think that in a city with a higher population than metro new york (!!) they would find some people who'd be interested even during the day.

i was stunned when i watched the gonzalez-match yesterday. the stadium was quite empty (and they didn't play during the day).

same thing happened in Doha early this year, they even had free tickets but the final between Ljubo and Murray was packed.

yeah but doha's different. the asian games in doha this year were desastrous concerning attendane, but that's because they just have 2 kinds of people living there: billionaires and poor labourers from india and pakistan. there's no people like "us", who're just normal (i guess) and like watching sports. they either have too much money or no money at all.

whereas beijing's a) WAY more populated than doha and b) boasts already quite a middle class (i guess).
