Is Chasing Records Getting to Federer?

I think what people see as decline, is really a guy who feels so close to breaking Samp's record. Who want's it so bad that his game has gone to the defensive.

Re: Is Chasing Records Getting to Federer?

Maybe it is a bit. He has appeared more nervous, his game has been more off, he has been stretched a little harder, in the last few slam finals. It is undoubtedly more pressure when you have 11 slams and 3 away, than when you are 7 slams and 7 away.

It's a pity, because combined with getting closer to 14, he is also going to get older and face younger, fresher opponents.

Are you unable to just enjoy his 12th major? Why Fed fans keep complaining, whining and finding negatives is beyond my understanding.

Me too. And this defensive plays is what allowed Roger 12 GS titles. There is a reason Roger is such a complete player: when he isnt striking the ball as well, he still can win through playing more defensive. Having more than one game plan is what makes a complete player.

There is a reason a guy like Marat wont win as much. Rellying only on pure talent, and winning only when you are on fire, wont get you to Roger's achievements.

ROGER FEDERER

COME ON MURRAY!
Andy Murray: USO champion! Roger Federer: LEGEND!

2012: A reminder to all of those who said Murray would never win a GS and that Federer was done winning GS titles!

The decline seems to have effected his play when not in a crisis. He is playing key points better than ever.

I answered the question that was asked in the thread. I am happy for him that he got a 12th slam, but I did not enjoy the match tennis wise except for the drama of those 78 set points or whatever that could not be converted.

Re: Is Chasing Records Getting to Federer?

you know, some fed fans just can't be satisfied!!! be happy with his 12th dammit! so what if it wasn't "beautiful" tennis, the guy still won a slam for pete's sake!

so if others win it with whatever kind of tennis they play, it's forgivable, but with fed, he has to play to your standards? c'mon....

I think you are spot on. He is less relaxed than before, which produces more defensive and less beautifull matches, but as other posters pointed out it also makes him tougher in critical moment

But I also think his net game is better than ever, he made it as elegant and efficient as the rest of his game

I don't know, looks like he just peaked early. He normally saves it for the final, this time he peaked against Lopez, then a gradual drop from there.

Re: Is Chasing Records Getting to Federer?

The proof:

Quote:
Federer shut out Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in two hours and 26 minutes to land his 12th career major and then claimed the young Serb's sudden emergence had only given him added motivation in his now-desperate quest to reel in Pete Sampras's all-time record of 14 grand slam titles.

For the first time, Federer openly admitted he was "chasing down Sampras" after surging past Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg into equal second place alongside Roy Emerson on the grand slam leaderboard.

"I think about it a lot now, honestly," Federer said when asked how badly he wanted Sampras's coveted record.

Re: Is Chasing Records Getting to Federer?

Roger made my day and my US Open worthwhile after the ladies whatever...anyhoo...this is big (chasing history). I do think Fed is more nervous inside and not as relaxed for this reason.

Just an humble Fed fan

Re: Is Chasing Records Getting to Federer?

I think Roger was nervous because it was first time in GS final against Nole - he wanted to make sure he got the upper hand here. That made him too nervous and he played badly. However, now that he's in Nole's head, I anticipate their next final will be all Roger.
