Angry US Open - Johnny Mac has to go!

He's another thing to ponder, and i'm very curious as to whether or not anyone else feels the same way.
John's commentary is horrid....but it doesn't have to be.
The man can be so arrogant and pompous and such a big fat know it all that i've actually muted the tv during matches. Years ago when he started he was ok. He gave some insightful points and he even,(God forbid if commentators do this) gave some instruction or pointed out how players hit the way they do, (technique, footwork, raquet and string tension.... Believe it or not, many people who WATCH tennis Play the game. So it was nice to see him giving some pointers so some of us could learn a bit of what the pros were doing. Where did that go? John is just a hack now, he's a "face" and a "name" to boost ratings. And on a side note, if you've watched the Open, don't you think they could do away with the pointless "celebrity know nothin' bout tennis" interviews? Again a ratings issue. I was watching some stupid actress talking about her upcomming failure of a movie while an entire point was played...disgusting coverage and an insult to viewers who contribute to their ratings whithout so much as a thanks. No, we get pro wrestlers and the next Julia Roberts wannabe sipping champagne in the front row blabbin' about nothing and the network thinks this is cute? I'm no activist and i'm a reserved person, but i go to the open every year and make signs and make t-shirts and give them away complaining about this, (not surprising i've never been on tv). Anyway, when you watch in August keep this in mind. Anyone agree/ disagree?

He commentated during the Aus Open and I enjoyed him far more then the usual jokes we get - right now I got Fred Stolle and I can predict what his going to say 10 seconds before he says it.

I enjoy his commentary, and Mary Carillo's too.

Re: US Open - Johnny Mac has to go!

I agree that McEnroe was much better when he began commenting. He was looking at the play and talking about it. He gave analysis and insightful commentary as well as being quite witty. However, in the last few years he seems to be covering the matches in his sleep. He talks over the poinst about things that have nothing to do with the match. It gets tiresome. I still like him, because of his wit, but he has deteriorated so much it is sad.

i'm gonna agree with Bunk here about johnny mac, he's also my favorite. It's Carillo and Drysdale and Evert that need to go away

He does talk like he's commentating in his sleep. He was witty and he was a fantastic player but if I here ONE more time that he can play the damn guitar...! By the way, the name escapes me but there's another commentator at the Open, he's kind of young, brown hair, I think he does baseball too? A nice guy no doubt, but is he just there to give the score and stats? Because you never here him say ANYTHING insightful about the game! I'd flush him down the throne in a heartbeat.

oh yes, Mary Carillo is one of my faves too! Where would we be without her Carilloisms!?! "He looks kinda geen, doesn't he" or whatever she said....

Johny Mac has the best commentary...can't see why you wouldn't like him. I like him alot, he's worlds better than his gimmicky brother or any other commentator. Actually my fav commentator is Martina Navratalova but, hopefully she will come back to the booth and do that...

Re: US Open - Johnny Mac has to go!

I quite enjoy Johnny Mac's commentary and he is one of my favourite commentators at Wimbledon. At times i admit it is tedious to listen to but most of the time he is entertaining and very informative.

If you have to get rid of any commentator then get rid of that idiot Pat Cash. He constantly slags off the same players all the time - Rusedski and Philippoussis purely because he is bitter and likes to kick people when they are down. It is totally unprofessional and after his recent comments on Rusedski's life and drugs scandal and Philippoussis's private life which is, incidentally, no one else's business apart from Mark's, I shall be unable to look at him in the same way or listen to him in the same way again. He just can't help himself.

I am ashamed at the BBC for not terminating his contract for Queen's and Wimbledon. I can't see how other Britons want to see or hear him either so his points of view will be useless.

Martina Navratolova is quite possibly the best, hope she does more. The bottom line is, we need players or ex-players doing the talking who know their stuff and who have little to gain for having their face and voice on camera.

Re: US Open - Johnny Mac has to go!

Any thoughts on Luke Jensen? I used to find his manner annoying ("dude!"), but I recently rewatched a bit of Rome 2002 and his commentary was refreshing. He was actually talking about the plays and explaining why a certain shot was particularly difficult/remarkable/low-percentage, etc. He talked about strategy and positioning quite a bit.

YES! This sums up everything I hate about Cash

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.
