Wink 1-10 -> Blake cameback to the 5-set hell

Blake has avoided the disgusting worst 5-set record ever in the Open Era. He was sharing the previous worst 5-set record (0-9) with Markus Hipfl. Now Blake is safe, Hipfl is a record holder Here are Blake's nine consecutive 5-set defeats:

0-1) US Open 2001, 2R - Hewitt 4-6 6-3 6-2 3-6 0-6
0-2) Australian Open 2002, 2R - Koubek 6-4 6-2 4-6 1-6 2-6
0-3) Wimbledon 2002, 2R - Krajicek 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 9-11
# There were no breaks of serve until 20th game in the final set
0-4) US Open 2002, 3R - Hewitt 7-6(5) 3-6 4-6 6-3 3-6
0-5) Roland Garros 2005, 2R - Wawrinka 7-6(9) 7-5 1-6 3-6 4-6
0-6) US Open 2005, QF - Agassi 6-3 6-3 3-6 3-6 6-7(6)
# Blake was leading 5:3* in the 5th, in the TB 5:4 with two serves
0-7) Davis Cup 2006, 1R - Gonzalez 7-6(5) 6-0 6-7(2) 4-6 8-10
# Blake was leading 3:1* (40-15) in the 3rd set, later in this set *5:4 (30-0); in the 5th set he was leading 4:1 (deuce), later 7:6 (deuce)
0-8) Roland Garros 2006, 3R - Monfils 2-6 7-6(2) 6-7(1) 7-5 4-6
# Blake was leading 4:3 in the 5th set
0-9) Wimbledon 2006, 3R - Mirnyi 4-6 6-3 6-4 1-6 0-6

1-9) US Open 2007, 2R - Santoro 6-4 3-6 6-2 4-6 6-4
# Blake saved 3 mini-match points at 4:4 in the 5th, in the next game won 4 points in a row from 0-30

1-10) US Open 2007, 4R - Haas 6-4 4-6 6-3 0-6 6-7(4)
# Blake had three match points at 5:4*

Re: 1-9 -> Blake's long hard road out of hell

A pity in a way, Markus Hipfl doesn't make nearly as surprising an answer to a trivia question as James Blake. I saw him play once.... it was a while ago.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Re: 1-9 -> Blake's long hard road out of hell

^ Thanks.
Blake is mentally stronger now more than ever.
Not only first five-set win this season, but also first win 2-1 with two winning tie-breaks (Monaco), first Grand Slam win with two winning tie-breaks (Russell) & two first wins after saving MP (Goldstein, Calleri).
Moreover he has won 7 sets from set point down what is a very good result for one season. He has finally found the right way to win often tight sets & matches

let's see if his record won't be 1-10 or 1-14 in a year's time...

Have to start somewhere - baby steps for the "new" Blake.

Re: 1-9 -> Blake's long hard road out of hell

So, basically, all he needs to do is play some aging, cramping, short guy for the next 9 five-setters, and he'll back to a respectful .500.

Book his place in the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
