Sampras says he'll decide at end of 2003 whether to quit

August 19, 2002

COMMACK, N.Y. (AP) -- Pete Sampras will assess his career at the end of 2003. Until then, don't talk to him about retirement.

``At the end of next year, I'll see where it's all at and then make a decision. That doesn't mean I'm going to stop or continue,'' the owner of a record 13 Grand Slam singles titles said Monday.

``I deserve to make my own decision as to when I leave the sport.''

He'll tune up for the U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 26, at the TD Waterhouse Cup, where he was a finalist last year. He also reached the final of the Open in 2001, losing to Lleyton Hewitt.

Sampras drew a first-round bye here and plays his first match Tuesday against Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, who won his opener against Guillermo Coria of Argentina 6-1, 7-6 (4).

Sampras lost in the first round of the French Open and the second round of Wimbledon this year.

``The day's of dominating and being No. 1 are over. I have to get my confidence back and you need to win matches for that to happen,'' Sampras said. ``My goal is to win another major and I believe I can in this year's U.S. Open, even though I haven't shown much this year.''

he's only faking out Andre. now poor Andre is thinking: "Damn i have to keep playing until 2004!!!!"

Q. When you've played as few matches as you have over the last two, three months, did you ever lack motivation to go out and practice?

ANDY RODDICK: Motivation? No. I enjoy what I do. I enjoy what I do. You know, I've never been one to, you know, blow off practice or, you know, do anything like that.

You know, I'd be lying if I said I'm looking forward to practicing the next two days as opposed to playing here. That part is gonna suck...(2010 Aegon Championships)

Why would he be waiting on Andre's decision????

Dont make me laugh.

Pete has been a champion and is one of the all time greats. Why are we always so quick to usher them out? He'll go when he is ready.

no need to pay attention to those bushers, Pete, you are always the greatest, win or lose

Rafa! Rafa! Rafa!

Epic movies, like brokeback mountain, are seldom found in the industry or worthy for the mainstream viewer. As often as I have watched the clips of this movie, I always find something more to it. For one, the gay stuff doesn't enter the picture for me, only the dimension of the highest love I have ever witnessed in life or on film.

Alright, lets start the poll...

who is going to retire first? Pete or Andre

(just kidding about the poll)

If he loses early at WB'03, I think he will retire at that point. He's looking for a good tournament to retire with glory.

My theory - that I'm sure I stole from someone else - was that Pete was going to retire the day after Agassi so that he could have the joy of being selected for the hall of fame over Agassi the first year they both come up for it

But jk
