Sampras says: I have a hard time watching how these guys play today

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/tennis...9520-19396420/

Quote:
Pete Sampras, the man whose total of seven Wimbledon singles titles Federer is chasing, said he was amazed none of his rivals pressured him more.

"I have a hard time watching how these guys play today," Sampras said.

"It's just amazing that everyone stays back and hits with so much spin. When you put spin on the ball on grass, it doesn't really do anything.

Slice does, top-spin doesn't.

"I was watching Igor Andreev playing James Blake in the first round and Andreev hits that big topspin backhand and it just sits up there, waiting to be hit.

"Granted, the guy is a claycourt player who isn't real comfortable on grass. But still ... the bottom line is that nobody comes with heat and can back it up. There's no Richard Krajicek around to really attack you and take your time away. That's the key to winning with the serve-and-volley game - deny the other guy his time.

"Roger Federer can win without doing it because he has so much game and such good hands."

Sampras is probably right, baseliners are ruining the game.

I like how he's saying the grass doesn't take spin, though. I'm sure Nadal's going to be really shocked to find that out.

There is a lot of truth in that statement. I just don't understand why they decided to slow the grass. Now you got grass clowns like Nadal, Canas, Fererro going far in Wimbledon. Granted that the players return better than during the sampras era, but I'm quite baffled to see players staying cowardly back when they have the opportunity to finish the point faster by coming to the net.

Re: Sampras says: I have a hard time watching how these guys play today

It's easy to see Sampras doesn't play anymore. With the slower grass it's not worth putting as much risk in your game, cause the other guy has enough time anyway. He's already sounding a lot like the John McEnroe of 3-4 years ago who also said guys needed to come in more and about how Henman needed to serve and volley. These days he's more realistic about it cause he sees how much the game has changed and you can't go running into the net at will.

I guess it just takes time for them to realize their style has passed and how the games evolves. I'm sure if Pete was playing today, he wouldn't be coming in on his second serve cause he'd simply get passed all the time.

I'm no fan of the serve fests or the days when points were over with just a couple shots but it's a shame the way juniors are being taught today. Basically hit the ball hard and if that doesn't work hit it harder. You know they're not being taught how to S&V.

Have you thought the author of the article might be as late as you?
