When will Federer retire?

He's 31 now and still # 1 in the world. Didn't have any injury problems and is still able to win slams.

So for how long will he play??

Re: When will Federer retire?

I think Federer will retire when he feels he can no longer realistically win majors and compete for #1 in the world. Based on what we've seen this year, I doubt he's close to feeling that yet. Age catches up to everyone eventually, though, so I'll say 2016.

Re: When will Federer retire?

I think Fed recently said doubles and such things are definitely not an option. Barring injury, until next OI at the most I think.

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

Its a lock till Wimbly 2015, for sure. Beyond that, I don't know.

As of now, there is no indication or stimulus to retire. If at all, he's pumped up, with Wimbledon, Olympics and #1.

Re: When will Federer retire?

Roger will play next year, he'll probably fight for slam titles. But if he fights for slam titles beyond 2013, I'm not sure. And once he has a season when he hasn't been a slam contender, I think he gives himself a one more year, and if he doesn't become a slam contender again, he'll retire, at Basel or at WTF if qualified. So not before 2015. But he won't play in 2016 just because he'd want to win Olympic gold, he'll play only if he's still one of the top players.

Re: When will Federer retire?

I think after Wimbledon 2014. I definitely think he will retire at Wimbledon, although I suppose he could do it in Basel or the WTF. Basel would be much lower-key though, which I can't see Fed going for really.

Roger has pretty much achieved everything he can do, now that he has 300 weeks. I don't see him winning another slam, and once that is confirmed in 2013, he will get sick of the tour but will hang on for one more Wimby.

I really think he'll retire at the US Open, assuming he has no spot in the WTF when he retires. Sampras and Agassi did it, and Roger has had nearly as great a history at the Open as he has at Wimbledon. Goin' out AMERICUH style!

Re: When will Federer retire?

His back problems will probably force him to retire after Wimbledon next year.

Or he might just skip everything from Wimby till USO stating injury and then give it a last shot, but i fear he won't make it for 2014

Re: When will Federer retire?

i say 2019. until the age of 35 he will be top 5, i believe he will be top 10 if he plays until he's 40, so definately top 10 when he's 38. one thing im pretty sure about is that he will play his last tournament in basel

This is not a joke sport like golf.

I agree with Basel as his good-bye tournament. That would be fitting.

I wonder who will be the player that beats him in his last match and sends him into retirement. Who knows, maybe he isn't even in top 200 as we speak. Let's just hope it's not Tomic, that would ruin Fed's brilliant carrer.

Re: When will Federer retire?

He will play only as long as he wins titles and is amongst the Top 4. Once he starts falling down the rankings, he will retire.
