Everyone thinks Safin is the same old inconsistent player he used to be. From what I've seen he is fairly consistently average these days barring the odd terrible defeat. More or less all his matches he plays at the same level, face it fans, he was once a great player but injury has ruined him. Is it sad, yes, but it has to be accepted. In his prime Safin could give Nadal a good match on clay, better than most. Now, I don't like his chances on any surface and that includes indoors.
I haven't seen him play in a while, but he looked good at the US Open until he lost. I don't think injuries have ruined him. I think he's too good to be losing after one match--wasn't he up a set and break here? Although Davydenko is a nemesis.
BTW, Safin has consistently sucked during this time of year, even before 2000, and he's never been beyond the 3rd round of Rome.
