What Has Almagro Done?

I looked at his bio and he has done NOTHING in the Grand Slams.

Australian Open - Never been out of the first round

French Open - Never been out of the second round.

Wimbledon - Never been out of the first round.

US Open - Never been out of the second round.

I thought this guy was a clay court specialist. James Blake is better than this guy on clay, Blake beat him in 4 sets last year at the French. Sure he won the clay court title in Valencia this year but who did he face? Jan Hajek, Alessio Di Mauro, Filippo Volandri, Santiago Ventura and Potito Starace. This guy is overrated and what boggles my mind is that he is has the fifth best odds to win the French Open this year behind Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Canas. Atleast they got it more right this time than last year where Almagro has rated third behind Nadal and Federer to win the French. Almagro will lose either in the first or second round again at the French Open.

So just because Blake beat him once makes him the better player on clay?

No, I'm asking what he has done on the court that makes him a good clay courter.

He is overrated...but he is top 15 in the claycourters list right now imo.

Re: What Has Almagro Done?

Watch the match he played with Roger last year in the semis or maybe it was quarter in rome. A really tight 3 set match. He has game everyone knows that. that why fed. was worried that he drew him first.

Re: What Has Almagro Done?

I understand he has the game but if he loses in the second round again or even the first round in the French, is that considered a disappointment?

He has game, yes. But Fed was never going to lose...to beat him you need to be very consistent, and Almagro is anything but that. Lack of consistency may also be what holds Almagro back from a real breakthrough.

Re: What Has Almagro Done?

He's a bit overrated on clay, but when hes on (majority of the time he isn't) he can give any player a hard time sans Rome 2006 against Fed. It usually takes a decent player to knock him out of a claycourt tournament, so far in 2007 Berdych and Fed are the ones to beat him on the dirt, both good claycourters.

Berdych won on retirement

Yes but People who are good but lack consistency are the people who worry the top pros since if they get hot they can take them out.

I thought we were talking about Federer? He can beat anyone else in the world on clay apart from Federer and Nadal...maybe Canas. To beat those 2 (or 3), he will need to be more consistent, or they will have to have a shocker day.

The problem with him is that he just goes off the boil virtually every set. You can't do that against the very best.

Re: What Has Almagro Done?

His development seems to have stalled. He was a better more consistent player last year but this year seems to be a bit of a blip. I still expect him to have some very good years ahead of him. So many times we've seen players peak when we least expected them to and I think it will be the same with Almagro, maybe in a few years time.
