Efficient Federer sweeps into last 16 in Rome
Tue May 8, 2007 2:28 PM EDT

By James Eve
ROME (Reuters) - Roger Federer began his bid for a first Rome Masters crown with an efficient 6-3 6-4 win over Nicolas Almagro on Tuesday.

The world number one, who had been given a bye into the second round of the claycourt tournament, was one of two players to reach the last 16 on a day when most other players were still involved in first-round matches.

He was followed by Argentine baseliner Jose Acasuso, who took advantage of a string of unforced errors by eighth seed Ivan Ljubicic to grab a 6-4 6-3 victory.

Federer had been forced to battle to 7-5 in the deciding set when he played Almagro in last year's Rome quarter-finals.

This time, however, he looked totally in control, raising his game to break the Spaniard in his opening service game, then again in the first game of the second set.

When Almagro created his sole break point of the match, Federer thumped down an unreturnable first serve.

"I wasn't too happy when I saw the draw, playing Almagro first up, because he's a great clay courter and a very dangerous player on any surface,"

said Federer, who finished runner-up in the Italian capital in 2003 and 2006.

"So to come through convincingly in two sets, not being broken and both times racing away with the lead after an early break, that was perfect."

Q. I think that Italian tennis needs help. Perhaps your help. Which advice can you give to Bracciali to beat Nadal?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, everything's possible at home I feel. But the thing is not to play great at home but to play away from home as well. I guess that's the secret to get the ranking up. Many nations have the same problem. They're not happy they're not happy with the players they have because they've been too spoiled in the past

Re: Roger Federer praised opponent first then CLAIMED winning convincingly!?

This was typical Fed. He didn't look like he was suffering from any confidence on clay issues...He was cruising...good footwork and sliding, nice net play..he was totally in control and when it was over he looked almost bored!

I don't expect he will have any problems reaching the finals regards of what "clay court experts" he comes in contact with.

I can´t see what´s disrespectful in Roger´s answers.

No offense, but are you dyslexic?

What do you call moonballing? Everybody can moonball. Can you do this?
At the other end of the spectrum was the Spanish player Sergi Bruguera, who generated topspin at an incredible rate that averaged over 3300rpm, more than 3 times as much spin of Mary Jo. Bruguera's average on 8 forehands was actually 3331rpms, and included the single fastest spinning forehand we recorded, an amazing 3751rpms in a match against Marcelo Rios.

In men's pro tennis it normally takes about 1 and 1/3 seconds for the ball to travel from one playerUs racket to the other in a baseline exchange. In the case of Sergi Bruguera's forehand, this means the ball is turning over itself 70 to 80 times as it travels to his opponent!

Is there any way I can block new topics made by him- just on my preferences.. so I dont have to see it.

or just block anything he says?
