Why do play days start and end earlier in clay than hard/grass?

At Roland Garros the day usually starts at 10-11am and rarely ends past 8pm, while at AO or USO, the match can carry out past midnight.

Is lighting the reason? And why is that a reason?

<I'm a newbie so don't blame me if you think the qn is stupid>

The Australian Open has feature matches that start at 7:30 every night. Good for tennis as this is prime time and a lot of people are interested in tennis here (but only in january....ask anyone here outside of january and they're like "whats a tennis?").

they can't play on grass after the sun goes down because of the dew that collects on grass - it would be very dangerous.

Plus, other clay tournaments play much later into the night, but for whatever reason Monte Carlo does not have night matches. Some of the South American tournaments have their feature night match at like 9-10pm.

they have artificial light. But tennis at Paris ends around 10pm when the sun goes down.

Also, aren't AO and USO hotter than FO?

I'm pretty sure AO is like Hawaii.
