Jarkko Nieminen goes to army

I don't know if you're interested, but this was in a Finnish newspaper today. I'll translate the main points of the article.

"Jarkko Nieminen is going to complete his military service:

Nieminen will start his military service in October in a town called Lahti in Finland. By doing this, he will choose a different path than most of the Finnish top athletes.

Nieminen says, that he considers the military service to be a question of honour for him and he will enter the service with an open mind. Nieminen hasn't been able to complete the military service earlier, but he says that he never thought about skipping it totally.

His military service will last 180 days. The shortest time possible. The Finnish defence forces have been very co-operative and Jarkko's service schedule will be constructed so that it will disturb his tennis career as little as possible. Nieminen says that he is very happy about this. "

Some of you may not know, but military service in Finland is something that every man has to do at some point. If you don't complete military service or civil service, you will go to jail. But the defence forces are usually very co-operative with the top athletes.

Just thought some of you might be interested...

I disagree with this - Jarkko is at the top of his tennis powers, so he should focus on tennis now and do military or civil service in a few years. Of course, I respect his choice .

Well, it used to be like that in Belgium and other European countries as well. Unfortunately, it was abolished and I think that is a bad thing. I think it is good to dedicate a short part of your life to your country. I think it should be compulsory for every young man and woman.

Bobby - from which newspaper did you read the news?

That will be really bad thing to Jarkko.
Although i think that the defence forces in Finland will be very co-operative with Jarkko and he can take part to many tennis tournaments.

Although i remember one top finnish tennisplayer in eighties - Leo Palin - who started play better tennis when he was in army in Finland.

Re: Jarkko Nieminen goes to army

Shahar Peer is currently serving in the Army AND playing on the tour (sorry to discuss a WTA player here - but I think its sort of on topic) - she has stated that the pride and discipline and Army training has strengthened her tennis career...

Hopefully the same will happen here with Jarkko

Re: Jarkko Nieminen goes to army

I read from finnish tennisforum that Jarkko will probably do his military service in two parts - first part during winter 07/08 and second part during winter 08/09.

That would be the best way for Jarkko and his tennis career.

I read this from Ilta-Sanomat webpages. Yeh, I think the defence forces will be quite nice to him.

Judging by his results, he´s not at the top of his powers at the moment. And anyway, in Finland you have to enter the military service at 28 years old, the latest. So Jarkko doesn´t have that much time. And it won´t be a big burden for him, I´d be surprised if he sleeps more than 2 nights in a barrack. It´s only us regular guys that actually have to spend at least 6 months in the army.

Well, it´s a question that is a lot more difficult than that. Mostly the history, international politics and geographical position of Finland have been the biggest reasons for a need of credible military defence.

I doubt it will damage Nieminen's career much though.
