bashing players

Mods, I really feel strong about this. We love tennis, yet for some reason many guys are being so rude to players. Without tennis players we would have nothing to talk about. all of these words, like mugs and whatever are driving me crazy. you should introduce a new policy that bashing players is not OK.

thank you,

Alex, I agree this type of thing is incredibly annoying, but I can't see how this can really be enforced, unfortunately, with the available resources in terms of moderator numbers, time, and especially given the need for consistency.

Maybe actually there could be a way, like some sort of algorithm that would obtain feedback from site users about posts they like or dislike, and you could maybe do some profiling, and a "web-of-trust" type thing where users end up self-moderating and filtering out the types of post that are likely to annoy them. Hmmm, got me thinking - I should talk to a friend of mine who writes collaborative software.

Anyway, until the software gets written, I don't see this as feasible right now.

Re: bashing players

I'd really like GM to be more respective towards players. But words mug and clown are obviously an MTF tradition. But word mug shouldn't be used in a derogative way. It shouldn't be OK to say "He's a Challenger level mug" when somebody ranked #200 makes an SF but it would be OK to say "He used to be a Challenger level mug" if somebody was earlier a mediocre Challenger player and now a decent ATP player.

the problem is that people often don't realise how well any guy on the Ranking plays tennis. I'm sure that even a #734 would not allow 99,99% of the posters here to get even one point in a match if he only played half serious. But many posters here never visited a tennis tournament themselves to see the speed and level of play with their own eyes. TV cameras aren't able to transmit many aspects of the game, especially the speed of it.

Yep, this is my dream in terms of advance for this forum: go towards self-moderation. That would require a complete overhaul of the board and is way above our power, but one can always dream

Re: bashing players

You can't prevent bashing from happening (because what's an objective opinion to one person is a subjective insult to the next), but how about creating a place where people who actually like tennis (given the general tone of most of the posts currently in GM, I'd say it's a minority and most come to MTF to argue) a room to do so without having to wade through the trolls, the flame wars,...

There could be one section where matches are being discussed (tournaments, matches, calendar issues, rule changes,...).
--> In this section, I'd suggest people to call the players by their names (instead of the nicknames such as Fakervic, Frauderer, Nadull,...) and actually make an effort to value the players instead of just throwing insults to see what sticks.

This would allow more freedom in the other section with general tennis discussions (with topics such as the GOAT debates, comparing of eras, various "what if" scenarios, funny pictures, videos,...)...
---> this section would be given more freedom, allowing more space for arguments, nicknames, etc.
I would put the current "off topic" sub-section, that now exists within General Messages, there.

All in all, General Messages would have 2 main areas:
- The Match Area (allowing doubles matches to go in there as well): strict moderation
- The General Area: not so strict moderation.

Impossible to enforce.

I can understand where people are coming from, but really, does it affect you that much? It's an internet forum after all... Just read it, have a quiet chuckle and move on...

Can you give examples of "bashing" posts that you think should be against forum rules? Maybe quote some in this thread if it's not too much trouble.

Re: bashing players

Thank you for the suggestion.

We do agree that this can be a problem, but until there are examples brought forward, there will not be much change.

One change we will be making is users will be warned or infracted (forum disruptions) for the use of improper names in the title. By not putting the proper names, it is difficult to find the correct match thread and impossible to search for a thread after the match has finished.

A second change that will be made is nicknames for players that involve 'fixing' or 'doping' allegations will now be infractions. (ie Fixeravic)

Nestor - Chvojka - Pospisil - Raonic - Peliwo

Re: bashing players

For what it's worth - probably not very much -I agree with Alex and Castafiore. An old thread from 2006 or thereabouts got bumped the other day, and it was almost a shock to recall that there was a time on MTF where threads existed that discussed tennis rationally. The guys were in some cases still poking fun at some things, but it wasn't the mean, spiteful kind of verbiage that now passes for trolling.

I think it is instructive that you're seeing less and less of the Stebs kind of poster in the last couple of years.

"When I'm asked, how is it to be around Federer, and what is he really like, I always reply, "I wish people could meet him when cameras or an audience aren't around, as he is one of the nicest people I have ever met when stringing on tour. " -- drakulie
