Tursunov Books Main Draw Spot
California-based Russian Dmitry Tursunov booked his place in the main draw of the Pacific Life Open with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hugo Armando in the final round of qualifying on Thursday. Tursunov, who moved from Moscow to Sacramento, California at the age of 12 and now lives in Roseville, reached the quarterfinals in Memphis last month.
The 21-year-old will meet former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson in the first round of the main draw in what will be his first ATP Masters Series tournament. The winner of the Tursunov-Johansson match will meet two-time defending champion Lleyton Hewitt in the third round.
Joining Tursunov in the main draw will be last week’s Acapulco finalist Fernando Verdasco after the Spaniard defeated American Robert Kendrick. Verdasco will now meet Frenchman Nicolas Escude in the first round of the main draw.
