Viña del Mar's ATP tournament wants Robredo to replace Cañas

Thursday, December 06, 2007
Patricio Muñoz Ortega, El Mercurio Online

SANTIAGO.- Álvaro Fillol is quite taken aback by the injury which will keep Argentine player, Guillermo Cañas (15th) off the courts for four months. "I guess they'll call me at some point to let me know", he said rather nonchalantly for being the director of a tournament that included Cañas as the second most important player, based on ranking.

In a statement made to Emol, Fillol said that "he (Cañas) was obviously an important part of the tournament, but we were negotiating the addition of a Spanish player. Were are still in the preliminary stages of conversation, but we would like to bring Tommy Robredo, (10th), whom we have already approached".

"We might add another Spanish player, perhaps Verdasco", added Fillol.

The director of the Viña del Mar tennis open, which will take place from January 28th to February 3rd, also mentioned that the center and adjacent courts have already been constructed.

The Viña del Mar ATP has confirmed the participation of Fernando Gonzalez, its most important figure by far. The tournament has also confirmed the attendance of Argentine players, Juan Martín del Potro, Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Mónaco, as well as Viña del Mar native, Nicolás Massú.

From eurosport.com:

ROBREDO SENT PACKING IN DOHA

DOHA (Reuters) - Second seed Tommy Robredo got his 2008 campaign off to a forgettable start when he was beaten in straight sets by Agustin Calleri in the Qatar Open on Tuesday.

The Spanish world number 10 never recovered after losing his first service game and went on to a 6-4 6-4 defeat against the unseeded Argentine.

Calleri, who went 2-0 up against Robredo, jumped to a 4-2 lead and then broke Robredo again in the seventh game to be serving for the set at 5-2.

But he faltered with two double faults and handed the game to Robredo, who held his serve for 5-4. But Calleri did not err again as he served out the set 6-4 in 42 minutes.

Calleri broke the Robredo serve again in the fifth game of the second before serving out the match and completing victory with an emphatic overhead.

"I am very disappointed being out of this tournament," Robredo told reporters. "I was trying all the time. I had my chances, but did not take them."

"After I lost my serve in the first game and it put me under a lot of pressure. I could not break him after that," he added.

"I wasn't happy with the draw. It was so tough. I will be playing in Sydney next and will try to do my best there before the Australian Open," Robredo said.

Re: ~<Tommy News>~

Shame about the loss, he's obviously not too happy with it, but Calleri is a tough first round opponent in any tournament, so he shouldn't be too worried. I'm happy that he's playing Sydney because it will be televised here. Best of luck Tommy!

From qatartennis.org:

DOHA

Agustin Calleri of Argentina on Tuesday produced an upset win over second Tommy Robredo of Spain at the $1.5 million Qatar Open. It was Robredo's maiden Doha match. Calleri, ranked 42, won 6-4, 6-4 under lights on Centre Court.

In 2004 in Doha, Calleri had reached semi-finals.

"I am very disappointed being out of this tournament," said Robredo."I was trying all the times. I had my chances but did not take them. I am happy that I did not give up till the end. I kept trying. After I lost my serve in the very first game and it put me under a lot of pressure. I could not break him after that," he added.

Robredo added: "I wasn't happy with the draw. It was so tough. I will be playing in Sydney next and will try to do my best there before the Australian Open."

DOHA — Tommy Robredo, the top ten Spaniard who is keen to better his Grand Slam record, got his season off to a bad start when he was well beaten in his first match of the year at the Qatar Open today.

The second-seeded Robredo lost 6-4, 6-4 in the first round to Agustin Calleri, the hard-hitting former top 20 Argentine who, despite his fall to a place outside the top 40, is one of the most dangerous non-seeds in the draw.

Calleri launched into the Robredo second serve from the start, broke immediately and sustained the momentum, consolidating the break right through.

In the second set the Argentine continued to take risks, and launched some big shots, especially with his forehand from the backhand side and again got a break ahead.

This time Robredo several times looked capable of breaking back, but his consistent topspin game from both wings never quite found enough penetration on the most important points.

“There were 20 or so guys in this tournament I wasn’t bothered about playing. But he happened to be one that I did,” Robredo admitted about an opponent with whom his head-to-head before this match had been three-all.

“He got a good start and when he gets ahead it’s difficult to make him miss. But there were a lot of moments in this match when I was close to changing it.

“He was love-30 and 15-30 sometimes and once he was 15-40 on his serve and made three unbelievable shots. He was better than me today but I keep working till the end and next time maybe I will have better luck.

“It’s my aim to reach the semi-final of a Grand Slam,” concluded Robredo, who has reached the quarter-finals three times in the French Open and once in the Australian Open.

“And I want to keep on improving. The day I stop wanting to improve is the day I will try to quit."

Asked about his surprise upset of the number two seed, Calleri replied immediately: “Maybe it was a surprise to you, but it was not a surprise to me. I went into this match with a lot of confidence."

He now plays Hyung-Taik lee of Korea, while Robredo flies immediately to Australia where he will try to improve his preparation for the first Grand Slam of the year by playing in the Sydney international championships.
