Re: ~<Tommy News>~

ROBREDO BATTERED BY FISH

Tommy Robredo, the 11th seed, crashed out of the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The Spanish baseliner was well beaten by Mardy Fish, the American posting a 6-1 6-2 6-3 victory on the Vodafone Arena at Melbourne Park.

Fish, a quarter-finalist last year, simply hit Robredo off the court, producing 39 winners to his opponent's eight.

Robredo looked to be feeling the effects of a five-set epic in the first round and was never at the races.

With seven breaks of the Robredo serve, Fish surged to victory in just 95 minutes and afterwards declared: "That was certainly one of the best matches I've ever played."

It was sweet revenge for Fish, who had lost to Robredo at last year's US Open having led him 4-1 in the final set.

Fish now plays 24th seed Jarkko Nieminen for a place in the last 16.

There was also an early exit for 26th seed Stanislas Wawrinka, who withdrew when two sets to one down against Frenchman Marc Gicquel.

Thanks for the info, dear.

I hope they win, because if they do and Germany defeats South Korea, they're coming here.

From atp.com:

SPAIN PILES UP INJURIES OPPOSITE NEWCOMER PERU

Davis Cup
Lima, Peru
February 5, 2008

“The pressure of triumph should not fall on us, that would be the worst thing," commented Jaime Yzaga and Americo Venero, captain and member of the technical command of Peru's Davis Cup team, who make no secret of their concern in the hours before the debut in the World Group. The resignations and injuries of key players from rival shift, Spain, have begun to create a climate of optimism among the public of Lima, creating unrest in the technical responsibles of Peru.

"There are those who moved from pessimism to a very radical optimism. Spain continues to be a very strong team", Yzaga and Venero agree.

Luis Horna and Ivan Miranda, who for the first time will dispute a match of Davis Cup at night with artificial light, are practising at the field that has been specially mounted in the Jockey Club of Monterrico District.

Since Saturday Horna, Miranda, Matias Silva and Mauritius Echazú work together after the elimination of number one of Peru's from Movistar Open of Viña del Mar.

Yzaga had training sessions at night since Monday to adapt itself to the artificial lighting that has been installed in the scene with capacity for five thousand people.

Spain arrived in Lima on Saturday night with a payroll that his captain Emilio Sanchez Vicario had to assemble of emergency before the injury of David Ferrer, No. 5 in the ATP South African Airways Ranking, and the resignations of Rafael Nadal, No. 2, and Juan Carlos Ferrero, No. 15.

Against this background the figure of Tommy Robredo, No. 17 ATP emerges as the most important along with Fernando Verdasco (No. 29). The team will be complemented by Nicolas Almagro (No. 31) and Feliciano Lopez (No. 37).

“We hope that the ranking weighs”, said Robredo. "I know that Horna doesn't looses in Lima for two years and he won me once, so I am sure it will be difficult to win him," he added.

"Our players are the best in clay," said Sanchez Vicario, for its part, but showed his respect for Horna's game. "He already won to our current number one and two, so it will be complicated, even more if he is at home.

Thursday it will be the draw of the series that will take place the 8, 9 and 10 of February in Lima.
