2013 French Open Round 3
Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo saved four match points as he ended Gael Monfils’ fairytale campaign at Roland Garros with a 2-6, 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-6(3), 6-2 victory in three hours and 46 minutes. Monfils held two match points on Robredo’s serve at 3-5 in the fourth set and served for victory at 5-4, 40/15. But he could not convert and Robredo fought back to claim the ensuing tie-break and an early break in the fifth set proved decisive.
The 31-year-old Robredo has also been on the comeback trail this season, rising from World No. 114 at the start of the season to No. 34 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. The right-hander captured his 11th ATP World Tour title at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca (d. Anderson) and was a semi-finalist in Buenos Aires (l. to Ferrer).
Robredo, a four-time quarter-finalist at Roland Garros, next will face countryman and 11th seed Nicolas Almagro.
